It was an odd hour for a meeting. Well probably not, Shedda was still working through putting herself back on a ‘typical’ sleep schedule. She was very interested to me Calloway, their intel officer. Shedda’s last ship wasn’t big enough nor their area of patrol warranting of an intel officer. Shedda was interested to see how the position fit in on a longer term assignment rather than mission specific.

She made her way down the corridor and stopped in front of the lab door and pressed the chime.

Mal’athar, XO

“It’s open,” Faye called out after entering a code to unlock the door.

The square windowless room held a bank of computer work stations on one side adjacent to the door, a large worktable in the middle of the room and crates of cargo tidily stored on the opposite wall. The brown-haired Human was sitting in the middle of the five workstations and three of the computers screens had something going on them. The one before Faye was scrolling lines of data that was she was watching intently. “What can I do for you, Commander?” Faye said with only the briefest of glances towards the visitor.

Mal’athar walked through the door and glanced around. She wasn’t sure what she was expecting, some kind of security check that included bio reading checks and voice print recognition? The computer set up reminded of her sophomore year room mate and her obsession with ‘gaming’. As always her uniform was crisp and neat, hair gathered in a small bun, her stance easy but not relaxed. “Cmdr Calloway,” Mal’athar said by way of greeting as she walked further into the room. “I was hoping to get to know you and your position a bit better. I’ve never been on a ship that rated having an intelligence officer on board. I prefer to work with others based on fact rather than assumption.”

Faye grinned, though she was still watching her screen. “Well, that’s definitely appreciated, though I’m sure some of the rumours about me are more true than not. And as far as the stereotypical Intelligence officer, I’m anything but. But that’s true ninety-percent of the time for me anyway,” she said with a shrug.

Tapping few keys rapidly, Faye swivelled and gestured to the other workstation chairs. “The truth is, Commander, that my role here was confused and mixed from the get-go. Secrecy, false orders and a whole other bunch of bullshit I’m not keen to repeat again. I’m a data specialist. I hack, I build extra security systems that prevent us from being hacked and I monitor our systems for breaches. And as a part of that I collect and disseminate information that might be vital to the safety of the ship and its crew. It’s not complicated, but people hear the word Intelligence and immediately think of covert operations. That’s not my role here now and I know those people. I’m not one of them. Take that as you will.”

Shedda took a seat at one of the workstation chairs with a slightly contemplative look on her face. “Well Cmdr, I haven’t heard any rumors, and I have no prior experience with intelligence so I have no prior preconceptions. And as one can imagine,” she gestured to herself, “I get subjected to quite a bit of stereotyping myself. I don’t abide by stereotypes.” Shedda tilted her head to the side. “So…while Cochrane and I are busy talking them to death, you’re hacking their computers and can tell us if they are telling the truth or not, from a data point of view?” Shedda didn’t read complete profiles, she would, but she’d been trying to learn faces and names, and then wanted the chance to learn about the officers first. She might find that she was wrong in that approach, but it was how she was approaching this assignment as XO.

Faye couldn’t help but smirk at the rumours part. If the new XO hadn’t heard them yet, she would and probably sooner rather than later. “Sort of. Depends on what’s needed. I mean, realistically, I’m not spending my day hacking. It’s a useful skill I employ in more critical situations. Having control over another person’s systems can give you all sorts of advantages we might need in a dire situation. What I really do is this…” she said, turning back to her screen. Her fingers flew furiously over the console and the screen flipped to a schematic of the ship with dots all over the place glowing.

“It’s an experimental secondary incursion protection system. R&D at Intelligence came up with the basic idea and I fleshed it out. They built the parts and then I installed them. A thousand hours of work later and we brought it online… successfully. It works. Now, it tosses errors at me on the regular and I have to then go investigate and crawl through jefferies tubes to figure out the issues. Sometimes it’s a parts issues, other times it’s programming and I have to troubleshoot and implement solutions. I do have the clearance to read you in on the reason why we need this, but I thought we’d wait till we got the pleasantries over with before I depress you for the rest of the day,” Faye said with a wink.

Mal’athar leaned in watching the screen, “This is seperate from our security and internal sensor grids? Am I correct in assuming that this system runs on a stand alone power source and computer corp? Can you monitor this from anywhere else or do you need to be at this station?” The benefits from a detection grid that could be monitored even if the ship’s systems went down were..how did humans put it…a game changer. “Is this system merely passive or could it be used offensively?”
