The new counselor had arrived on board and Shedda, not only to set an example, but she was due for her yearly evaluation. Shedda never avoided these as she understood the need for them and she never really understood why others went so far out of their way to avoid it. Shedda was a very private person so she didn’t turn to the counselor every time she had a hard decision to make or doubted herself. She worked through them on her own, but if she couldn’t right to the counselor’s office she would go.

And not only her own evaluation to cover, Shedda wanted to meet the newest person on the senior staff. Songz was not an officer, in fact she was civilian and through an exchange program, and Shedda had never spoken with a non-Fleet counselor. She was interested to see how the experience and perspectives might be different. With that in mind Mal’athar arrived promptly at the office on deck 8 at 1400 for her meeting with the new counselor. She pressed the chime and waited.

Mal’athar, XO

“Come in!” a cheery voice sounded before the door allowed for entrance.

Standing in the middle of her modest office, Songz wore a puzzled expression as she stared at the wall. Standing fairly tall for many hUmanoid species, the Kobliad had lilac coloured hair pulled back off her face with a black soft headband. Her light brown eyes were deeply set amongst the prominent vertical facial ridges that split her hairline, intersected by thinner horizontal ridges. Most definitely on the lean side, the new counsellor worse simple black trousers and a dark blue tunic that she had adopted in her previous stint on a Starfleet facility: her version of a uniform. She did have a standard combadge though.

Shedda entered and took in the woman and the office space with a quick glance. She liked the hair color. Most Orion women had dark brown or black hair, but died it different colors. Shedda had once, but the color hadn’t come out right and it was horrid. The memory made the corner of her mouth twitch.

Staring at her first first of personalized decor- a painting sitting above the small sofa- the giant splashes of colour were making her frown deeper. “Is it too much?” she asked, casting a brief glance at Ma’athar.

Sair Songz, CNS

She turned her gaze on the painting and contemplated it. “I don’t think so, Counselor. There are several colors but in large sections. Enough to draw attention to the contrast but not so many in miniscule sizes as to become distracting or frustrating to look at. At least from my perspective.”

Chewing on the inside of her cheek, Sair nodded. “Well, if I don’t like it, I can always change it, so let’s give it a try,” she said with a nod, more to herself than anything.

Sair gestured to the sofa and pair of armchairs around a circular table. “Go ahead and make yourself comfortable. If I’m a bit scattered it’s because you’re one of my first appointments here and I’ve just started to set up the office. At least we both know what it’s like to be new, here, right?”

Mal’athar nodded, “Indeed we do. And my office looks even less inviting, so you have a leg up already.” She choose a set on the couch, one arm on the arm rest, the other along the back and stretched her legs out just a bit. “Was the transition smooth for you, rejoining the exchange program?”

Mal’athar, XO

“For the most part,” Siar said as she claimed one of the armchairs. Everyone has been very supportive and patient. It’s been a few years since my last stint so I have to try and remember all those regulations you officers have memorized. That and I’m used to working within a particular space I know easily so I’m getting lost on this ship all the time. But it’s certainly making it interesting. That and it’s a surefire way to meet new people,” she said with an open laugh.

“If you need someone to help you learn to navigate the ship I would be happy to help, or we can get someone from security to give you a tour or two. Don’t forget to use the LCARs panels as well. Just ask the computer to show you the way and then follow the dots.”

“How are you faring so far?” Songz asked.

~Sair Songz, CNS

“The ship’s day rotation is a bit different, all ships are, and I was on several on my way out here, so I am adjusting a bit but nothing out of the ordinary. And so far I am enjoying the challenge of my new position. Though finding a quiet place to simply think seems to be…a challenge.”
