“Now…” he said and grunted as he yanked free a mass of roots, “… when have you ever known me to let something do that?” and he glanced at her and shot her a quick grin before going back at the now mostly uncovered but unexpectedly large root ball.

“Never, but let’s not start a new habit,” Faye said with a chuckle. “But admit it, it feels good, doesn’t it?” she said waggling her brows. “The energy required, the exertion, the smell of the dirt. It’s like some sort of primal connection.” She screwed her face up into a frown. “Which sounds really weird now that I say it aloud, but you know what I mean.” Alex usually did. Unless he didn’t and they had one of their confused arguments until things were made clear.

“Getting back to the land… common drive for a lot of species. And out here? Floating in nothing for years? Having some solid ground to mess around in may the most cathartic thing one can do. Might have to mandate a garden on any ship I’m on. Don’t worry… I’ll name them all ‘Faye’s House’.” and he laughed.
Alex
Faye laughed as well and shook her head. “Well, I’ll be honoured. Actually seems fitting given I’m supposed to be your gardener some years in the future. Oh! And Dag joked you could get the Friends and Family discount on our shipping company, which I’m leaning towards making a horticultural one,” she said with a gleam in her eyes.
The pile of peppers had grown and Faye gathered them all up in the hem of her t-shirt, wishing she had thought to grab a basket. “What else do you think you’d like to grow in here?”

Without missing a beat, he said “Vulcan Hibiscus. My mom’s favorite. And marigolds… my favorite.” He gave a final tug and the problem plant came free and none of the surroundings were any the worse for wear. “Done! I am a master gardener now, right?” and he laughed.
Alex
Faye laughed as well. “Sure. And there’ll be a nice spot for the hibiscus in that corner near you. The size should work out alright and with a bit of consistent pruning would work look really nice here. Marigolds are easy. They tuck into the small bare spots and we can start seeds in the greenhouse or sow them directly. Whichever you prefer.”
