Kobliad- The Point of No Return

Posted by Civilian Sair Songz (Counselor) in Kobliad- The Point of No Return

(snip)

In the back of her mind, Kal’s words repeated themselves and she knew that she owed it to herself to be open to whatever comes her way. It was time for Sair Songz to dream again and follow those dreams wherever they may take her.

Kobliad, 2397

Tiny hands clutched at her flowing skirt and Sair bent to scoop up her toddler. Koro buried his face into her neck, his little arms flung around tightly.

“Gah!” Sair exclaimed as she pried his arms a little looser. “Let’s not choke Mira now.”

“Here, I can take him while you finish packing,” her mother, Kel, said.

Torn between wanting to just let the boy snuggle and the sudden time crunch she was under, Sair sighed, kissed Koro’s head and handed the boy over.

Kel promptly bounced the two year old on her hip as she watched her daughter quickly pack the piles of stuff into the limited luggage. “You can change your mind, you know.”

Sair’s head snapped in her mother’s direction. “Why would I do that?”

“I’m just saying, it’s okay to change your mind. People would understand if you did.”

She sighed. “Will they understand if I can’t stay? If I need to desperately be anywhere else?”

Kel sighed. “Of course. No one wants you to suffer, Sair.”

“I’m not suffering. Not anymore. I just can’t be here anymore. It’s too depressing. And you of all people should know this.”

Stepping closer, the elder Kobliad rested a hand on her daughter’s shoulder.

The moment the doctor had handed Koro to her in all his tiny perfectness, Sair changed. She wasn’t sure exactly what it was, but that beautiful moment in 2395 was etched in her mind indelibly.

She had returned to Kobliad after deciding to retrain as a counsellor. She loved medicine and she knew she might even return to it one day but for right now, she needed time. She needed more regular hours and time to herself to allow for possibilities. The decision to get a donor and try for a baby had been an easy one but the process had been rough. Taxing. Heartbreaking.

Koro didn’t erase all that pain and hardship but he made it worth it. Even now as she realized that Kobliad wasn’t home for her anymore, that she missed meeting other species and seeing the deepness of space, she was doing all this for Koro. One day when he was older she wanted him to understand that life was full of possibilities and opportunities, but you couldn’t sit around waiting for them. Sometimes you had to go out and get them, and that was what Sair was doing now.

The Exchange Program didn’t hesitate to welcome her back and she knew that there would be some challenges working with Starfleet again, but she knew deep in her heart that this was the right path for her. Maybe it would be temporary but she’d throw herself wholly into the experience and see what happened. Because they hadn’t come this far as a people, and she hadn’t come this far herself just to shy away from the unknown, from the scary, from hope.

Packing her bags, Sair mused to herself that if she had thought her first time away from Kobliad had been life-changing, that this time would be even more so. For she was going to the Delta Quadrant, in a new role and with a new perspective. And this time she could carry her optimism and perspective in perfect balance.
