It was quiet in Alex’s quarters. Whether that was due to the late hour or the stillness of the room’s only occupant was a toss up… but it was quiet. Alex sat in a chair facing the window, looking out into the black void of space. A half-full glass of an amber liquid sat on the left arm of the chair, his fingertips barely resting on the rim of the glass. He was motionless, his eyes fixed onto something that no longer existed in his world.

Zef was gone. Not transferred… resigned. Returned to Baj to complete her pregnancy and seal an even more auspicious role with her people. She had said it was better this way. She loved him, but the timing… it was always the timing. When they first met, they argued. They spoke at cross-directions on matters they actually agreed on. They went on a date and Alex hadn’t known it was a date. Even their first night together started off nervously and slightly awkward… although they finished closer to each other than ever. Timing… it always came down to timing…

For the first time in over an hour, he moved. He lifted the glass to his lips and took a drink before returning it to its place of residence on the arm of the chair. His other hand went to the pendant on the chain around his neck. He rubbed it with his fingers. The last gift she had given him… the last gift she would ever give him.

If he was being honest with himself, he knew she was right. She had an obligation to her people before any obligation she had to him. Just like his role as Captain would always come first because it had to, the same could be said for Zef. So he wasn’t mad at her… he was simply heartbroken. He took another drink and then said “Computer, send a message to Lieutenant Commander Calloway asking her to come to my quarters please. And have Operations come get these crates.” There was chirp of acknowledgement…

Then silence once more.

Alex

A few minutes later, the door slipped open. She didn’t even bother pressing the chime- Faye didn’t need to. He had summoned her and it made no sense to wait on ceremony, not with Alex.

The moment her feet crossed the threshold and surveyed the room and his mood, she understood something hard had happened. She moved silently through his place and grabbed a glass from the cabinet, and the stone (she knew where he kept it now), plopped it in the glass and moved over to where he sat. She leaned against the wall next to the window, facing him, her stormy grey-green eyes concerned. “So, what are we drinking?”

Alex didn’t move much, but inclined his head to the low, ugly, somewhat scary table in front of him; on which sat a mostly-full bottle. At that time, a chime sounded and Alex said simply “Enter.” and the door slid open.

Faye reached forward and picked up the bottle, sniffed it and then poured herself a couple measures.

Two Operations crew came in and said “Hello, Captain. Computer said y-” and then one read the room and elbowed the other. With a quick glance at Faye, then a glance at the back of Cochrane’s head, they simply spied the two small-ish crates and loaded them up and left.

Faye’s eyes tracked the two crewmen before her gaze flicked to Alex.

As the door slid closed, Alex let out a long breath.

“She’s gone, Faye. Zef left.”

Alex

Inhaling, she blew out a breath and took a heavy sip. “Damn! I’m so sorry, Alex, I truly am.” What else could she say. Nothing, that’s what. So she set her glass on the coffee table, and brought over one of the dining chairs, setting it next to him. Sitting with her legs crossed, she sipped and looked out the windows. “You know I’d take away all the pain for you if I could, right?” But like anything in life, it was something that had to be worked through.

There was a long silence, and Alex didn’t move. “That’s the thing that bothers me the most, I think. I’m heartbroken, yes. I love her, Faye. I really do. But… I don’t know… some part of me is saying that no matter how I feel… she and I just… well… we simply had our time together, and now… now we ran out of that time. It isn’t the fault of either one of us. It’s just… timing.”
