A throaty chuckle ensued. “Haven’t you learned yet that I’m full of stories, Dag? All part of the service. And the best part is that the better a person knows me, the more interesting the stories get,” she said with a wink.

“So, I’m half-drugged out of my mind after nine months playing guest to the Tal Shiar and my helper, who I now know was my mom, get me to my shuttle, the one improved a bunch fo stuff on and roughed up a bit at the same time to look like it was stolen. I’m sure there’s a story as to why the Romulans didn’t destroy it, but nonetheless it was still there. Mom gets me on board and injects me with stuff to help wake me up essentially. By the time I can focus, she’s long gone and all I remember is this Romulan woman rushing off. Well, I don’t waste time and hightail it out of there,” she said, watching the stars zip by through the viewscreen.

“Before too long, the Romulans are on my tail. Two warbirds, and I think ‘I’m dead. Might as well make it as hard for them as possible’. So I pull out every evasive manoeuvre I know, including some old Maquis tricks and we do this fantastic dance all the way through to and through the Neutral Zone. All I’m trying to do is get across the border enough to shake them off, but they weren’t likely to go away without some encouragement. So I sent out a distress call.

“I managed to cross over the line but they fired a shot while they were on their side of the border that does in most of what was left of my systems. I’m thrown forward, head hits the console and I black out. Next thing I know I wake up and everything is fuzzy, but I’m no longer on the shuttle and there’s someone near me. My eyes look around and it sure as hell looks like the Samurai, which the Tal Shiar would use sometimes that simulation to try and trick me into letting down my guard. But I’m not playing their game any longer, so I jump off he bed, despite there still being a cocktail of stuff in my system and I swipe a laser scalpel off a tool tray and grab the nearest person I see, who just happened to be this poor engineering ensign who was fixing a biobed.”

Faye shook her head and leaned back in her seat. “And the rest, they say, is history. But that flight Dag?” she said, her eyes calmly fixed on the blur of stars. “I hadn’t felt so alive as I did on that chase. It wasn’t just the adrenaline, but it was this overwhelming desire to go home, even though I didn’t know where home was. I just knew it was back in the Federation.” She turned her head to gaze at the man her heart now clung to with everything it had. “I couldn’t process the ramifications of what all just went down, but before I was captured I had considered staying with the Reunification Movement. But it wasn’t where I was meant to be.”

Daggum looked at her and smiled. He reached out and took her hand in his and said “No… you are meant to be here. With me. Telling me stories and letting me fall in love you you just a little bit more every day.” He turned and looked out the viewscreen. “You know… for as big as the galaxy is… for as many circumstances and situations and paths people can take…” and he looked back at her, “… I think some things just are, regardless of anything else.”

Squeezing his hand, Faye beamed. “There’s no where else I’d rather be,” she said softly, squeezing his hand again before letting it go.

Returning her focus to her console, she checked their coordinates. “Alright, this should do it,” she said, as she pulled the ship out of warp as she altered their vector, dropping to full impulse. In the visible distance was a swirl of colours, though in front of it were asteroids, dotted. Turning her head briefly, she looked at Daggum. “Do you trust me?” Her tone was light and she knew the answer but she still needed to have his confirmation, his agreement with whatever adventure she was about to take him on.

“With my life.” he said without hesitation. He peered at the vista in front of them. “Where are we, Faye? This is amazing!”

Daggum

“Koska nebula. There’s an asteroid field right there in front of us. We’re not far from the station and the Manhattan surveyed the area at one point. Nothing much out here, except for this. But it’s close to a couple inhabited systems.”

Flexing her fingers, Faye stretched out her arms. “Already my dear, hold on tight! While I’m not going to recreate my mad dash from the Romulans, I’m going to simulate how it felt,” she said with an almost giddy grin.

The whole time they were talking, they were still travelling at full impulse, but now Faye shifted the guidance system into manual input so she could let her senses guide her. Pushing the engines, they sped forward, an asteroid rapidly approaching. But Faye was utterly calm, letting the ship get rather close before veering off and around, her eyes tracking the movement in the asteroid field. Daggum could see the field clearly on the sensors, but Faye wasn’t paying any attention to her console, her fingers flying out of touch memory and her keen reactions.

Immediately they dipped underneath another asteroid and her eye caught another closer than preferred and she spun them up and over. The inertial dampers complained but she wasn’t pushing them beyond a safe point. More than anything Faye was skirting that line of danger, mindful that she was not trying to show off so much as create a feeling for them both for when they reached the nebula. The swirl of colours beckoned and all they needed to do was get through. “So my dad told me once that flying a ship in the day and age we live in was as much a life skill as knowing how to swim. After mom disappeared, it was like he couldn’t bear for me to be out of his sight, so he took me with him if he left the colony. We’d do stuff like this to test the modifications he’d make to the few ships we had.” The dampeners complained again as she did an abrupt loop, grinning.

Daggum smiled as she manivered them over, under, and around. His gaze was half on the viewscreen, half on her. She was happy… and that made him happy. He focused fully on the view in front of them and then said “He wasn’t wrong. Before I was allowed to work on the engines, I had to be able to pilot the ship. It was always something I try to keep current with.”
