Alex’s eyes narrowed and a small smile played across his face. “Faye… why are you trying not to laugh?” was all he said as he waited for Faye to either talk or fall out laughing.
Alex
“Okay, in a little bit when we’re done here, we’re going to go to my quarters and I will show you what she sent me, which I’ve got to send to Dag as well- speaking of green hulks- but”-she leaned forward-“the two of them got hitched the other night. Some subspace justice of the peace, though, dude, that’s not what I would call her.” She couldn’t help it. the airy fairy tone of the woman floated into her head and she burst out laughing. “They played the sober couple really well but there’s no way in hell they were sober when they did that. And I think you’ll agree!” Faye said, laughing so hard her voice was pitching high.
~Faye
Alex looked at her for a moment, not comprehending what she was saying. “Wait… you… they… you mean… the two… your mother… Pikelsimer… they… married?!” He leaned back heavily and said “Holy crap… I did not see that coming.” and he stared for a minute and then shook his brain into gear. He looked at Faye and said “And… how are you with that?”
Alex
She looked a little bewildered and just shook her head. “I’m not sure yet, but I’m not upset at all.” Faye sighed. “I’ve been watching her Alex, especially at and since the wake. I’ve seen how she is now and how she is with him. She’s different, more open. You didn’t know her before. She was never cold as a mother. She was affectionate and listened. I never felt like I was bothersome or anything. But she was… closed off. You could never quite tell what she was thinking or how she truly felt about anything. I liken it to an onion. That woman has layers unlike anyone I’ve ever met. And it’s really hard to peel them back far enough to get to the core. I’m similar but I built up walls. And it took someone like Daggum to stop trying to break down the walls. Instead, he built a door, Alex. He can come and go from the walls and because he chose that way of being there for me, he gets to have that door permanently unlocked. And I think Pikelsimer has done something similar. I think maybe he’s able to hold that core gently enough that when the layers are peeled back, she doesn’t felt so exposed. And who the hell am I to deny her that support and comfort?”
~Faye
Alex stared at her in disbelief. “Pikelsimer… gentle?! That guy? Are we talking about the same Pikelsimer that was here? On this ship? That Micah Pikelsimer? Gentle? Faye, I watched that guy gut punch a Naussican for chewing with his mouth open! I saw him intentionally pick a fight with two Orion Syndicate bodyguards because, and I am quoting here, ‘I ain’t never decked a gangster before.’!” Alex looked at her… and started laughing. Not hard, but enough. “It would absolutely take a woman like Shara Calloway to bring out that man’s ‘sensitive and gentle’ side.” and he kept laughing until tears came. “I’m… really… happy… for… them…” he said between bouts of laughter.
Alex
Faye chuckled too. “Yeah, well, this is Shara we’re talking about. Two peas in pod those two. Look, I don’t know Micah like you do, but I can tell you this. Mom grew up with a bitter father who turned to alcohol to soothe his wounded pride and then took out his anger on the universe on those he claimed to love. She ran away from home when she was sixteen, Alex! And I know a thing or two about running, so I get it. She wanted freedom and safety. But life has been unkind to her. I still have to stop and remember that while I was on Orion with him, she was in the Delta Quadrant desperate to get home to her husband and child. And then she learned that everyone was killed and she didn’t know I was alive for years after. And then she has spent the majority of her life undercover, with an alias.” Faye shook her head. “Now you go ahead and tell me that she’d accept someone who tried to bully their way into her life…”
~Faye
Alex waved her off and calmed down a bit. “On no no no… not what I’m saying at all. Pikelsimer is just… well… he’s an acquired taste. Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy. And I trust him. And for how he is built, he is surprisingly not a bull-in-a-china-shop kinda guy… unless he has to be. It’s just… I dunno… I always saw him as him. Never as part of something else. I mean hell, that’s why he is so good at his job. He works so well off on his own. The idea of him married… it’s just a wholly foreign concept. But I am honestly and sincerely happy for them. I really am.” and he shook his head and sipped his coffee. He then grinned and said “Micah Pikelsimer is your dad now, Faye. Has that occured to you?” and he grinned.
