Things had finally smoothed out after a few days on board. Well that really was more dramatic than it was. Revna liked to stay busy, but never tended to do working meals unless necessary. And it hadn’t been, but she felt, ill educated about the politics, species, economics, and the list went on, of things in the Delta quadrant. So she’d been studying, reading, arranging the conference room and her office so that it would be easy to modify for whomever came on board. She hadn’t been to the officer’s mess since she’d met Cochrane there. It just felt strange. She wasn’t an officer, not anymore. She hadn’t been avoiding the mess or the crew, she’d simply allowed herself the choice of diving into her work and her new position and finding her feet there first. And now only time and experiences would tell how successful she’d be.Okay well maybe she was avoiding the chef…maybe and she laughed softly to herself as she pressed the control panel for the door. She walked in and over to the replicator, for all the world it appeared she was about to order coffee from the infernal machine. That’s what most people drink. A moment later she took a steaming mug from the self and turned, heading for a table.

Not long after Revna settled in at the table, another person entered the mess. The newly promoted and more aptly designated counterintelligence officer, wandered in, her footfalls quiet and sure. Moving to the galley passthrough, she poked her head over and smiled. Ahhh, stew! Harv was good to her. Slipping into the back, she helped herself and grabbed coffee while she was at it.
Her initial sweeping glance of the mess had already told her where she’d sit and soon enough she was sliding into the chair opposite Revna, setting her bowl and mug down gently. “So… newbie. Bet I know the surefire way to get myself expelled from the table and maybe put myself in the line of fire…” she said, her stormy grey-green eyes gleaming.

Revna looked over as the young woman sat down. She recognized Faye from the promotion ceremony and from the wake. She nodded politely while she dug into her pocked and pulled out a tea bag. Mike made her the most amazing black tea with loose leaves. But these tea bags he’d gotten for her before the Manhattan left were a close stand in. She dropped the bag into the steaming water and let it steep. She contemplated the woman, counter-intellegence if she remembered her details correctly. And there was only one thing most people wanted to know about these days…well one of a handful. “I’m sure you do Lt Cmdr Faye Calloway, counter intellegence officer. You wouldn’t be worth your salt if you didn’t know that before you sat down. So tell me…”

Calloway grinned. “Beings with a p, ends with an s. You know it’s funny. When I was first on the Atlantis, the doc there that saved my life and my brain called me Princess all the time. Ironically, of course. I’m about as far as you can get from being the real deal.” She dipped her spoon into her bowl and savoured it entirely. Always worth it. Every time.

Revna sighed, well played Calloway. It had been a long time since anyone had surprised Revna. Taking a spoon and stirring her tea. It wasn’t quite dark enough yet. She despised that term, but she was going to have to get used to it. The diplomatic corp expected her to use her title and position to bolster her influence and respect among other delegates. But she didn’t miss a beat, though Faye being an astute observer would catch the very subtle and quickly hidden frustration at the word. “I find that people have a skewed perception of what the ‘real’ deal is. My captain on the Centurion used to call me that, because of these,” and Revna reached back pulling part of her braids forward where Faye could see the runic copper beads threaded into her hair. “He said when I pinned my hair up out of the way it looked like I was trying to wear a crown. Made the mistake of saying he hadn’t seen my crown.”

Faye snorted. “Idiot.” She took a sip of her coffee. “Don’t worry, I won’t be one of the annoying ones. Your secret is safe with me as long as you want it to be a secret. I got plenty of my own sore spots. I don’t go needlessly other peoples. Though to be fair, I have a really excellent way of inadvertently hitting sore spots with people. Foot-in-mouth syndrome and all that. Did you see my t-shirt at the wake? One of many but it says ‘I came, I saw, I made it awkward’,” she said with a grin before delving back into her stew.

Revna was curious but not put off by the seeming conflicting statements and posture. She came wanting to make Revna uneasy to push her, and now was overtly friendly. Sore spots of her own indeed. “It’s not a secret, but not something I advertise either. People tend to latch on to such things and assume that’s all I am. And it’s not. Good for you though. If you didn’t make it awkward that means it’s comfortable. And comfort is good but not nearly as much fun as awkward. As for sore spots , hit all you want. My Da would tell you that having sore spots means you’ve lived a life worthy of retelling in the great epics. And so far, I’ve discovered, he’s right.” She picked up her mug and cupped it with both hands, bring it to her face and letting the steam warm her before sipping at the strong black tea. Next trip back to the station she was making Mike give her the honey he used when he made it. She smiled to herself, he’d probably refuse, telling her he needed to hold on to something that would make her come home. Like anything could stop her from going home to him.

The counselor entered the officer’s mess starving! The increase in hormones was reeking havoc with her system and she didn’t have the nuances down yet. As always, her grey/blue eyes scanned the people there and she was strangely happy to see Calloway. “Faye? I feel like I haven’t seen you in a week!” Zef walked over to the table as she spoke. Not wanting to be rude, her eyes settled on the other woman. “Hi, I’m Cmdr Zef Rollo, the ship’s counselor. I believe you are Revna McKenzie?”
