Pretha applauded and smiled with all the others. It was nice to see a Captain who knew what kind of crew he had, and recognized them as well. As more and more came and went on the stage, she made a mental note to get to know them. The Department Heads, especially, since CRIT would have need of them assuredly. Either they would be part of the team, or would know which of their crew members would be a good asset to the special team.

She took another drink as a server passed her and leaned back on the wall. Glancing around the room, she saw Zef and reminded herself she should make an appointment to see the woman. She was curious what she wanted to see the Lieutenant about.

Jasmine held onto Max’s hand as they moved next to Cochrane. She smiled at everyone feeling a bit on edge. She preferred to fly under the radar instead of glowing like a beacon on it. It was not that she had stage fright or a fear of public speaking. Jasmine just liked to live in anonymity as the old saying went. Luckily Max was there and could bear the brunt of the jokes, thank yous, and pull out a few laughs from the crowd. He tended to be the more outgoing of the two in a public setting.

“Cap’n,” Max acknowledged Cochrane as they took the stage. If he was indeed the one who was better in a public setting, he didn’t show it well. At the moment it looked like he would rather be tucked away in the Engine room but with Jasmine wearing the stunning blue dress that she was, he very much doubted any eyes were on him. Suddenly sporting a grin, he gave Jasmines hand a squeeze.

Looking out at the crowd, a bright light as brilliant as any flash bang erupted from the crowd making her squint and rub her eyes. “Sorry. Sorry,” Bob raised a hand from the back of the room. “That was on me. All me. Didn’t realize the flash was on and there wasn’t anything about no pictures. Their mom’s are gonna love this. Keep going,” he waved his hand towards Cochrane. Bob was not allowed to interfere with the daily aspects of their job yet off duty, it was all his time. The image of Max and Jasmine wasn’t the best but it would appease Genoveva and Issy when they how things are going. “You know how it is. Moms they want a minute account of your week and when all you have done is work five shifts, eaten a couple of tacos, and ran around the gym, they get all frustrated that you aren’t sharing.” Raising the camera, Bob pointed at Max. “You will thank me when you can use this gem to chat to ol’ Genny tomorrow. Please proceed,” Bob took a seat position himself so that he could still digitally record the event for posterity and the Ministry of Harmony’s records.

“Sorry,” Jasmine mouthed to Cochrane as she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear waiting for the Captain to continue.

Jasmine Wynter

“Wait we have another call with my mother tomorrow?” Max’s grin dropped and he looked sideways at Jasmine. “They really are getting antsy that you aren’t pregnant yet huh. Reckon we can make Bob look like a baby every time they call, just for a few years?”

Max Wynter, CE

Cochrane looked at both and said quietly “Marriage counseling on your own time, you two.” and then turned to the crowd. “Our Chief Engineer and and Chief Medical Officer have done a stellar job, and this last mission was no different. Mr. Wynter put himself in harm’s way to assist the Graviens; and Dr. Wynter was crucial to lending medical aid to injured Graviens… individuals who were key in the resolution. For their actions, it is my pleasure to award them both the Commendation for Dutiful Service.” He took the last two boxes from the tray and held them out the Wynters. He looked at Jasmine and said “You’re still not off the hook, Doctor. We will discuss that Sickbay conversation tomorrow.” and then he stood back and clapped, and the crowd followed.

Faye did her wolf whistle for the couple and smiled, despite the fact that her and Jasmine hadn’t spoken since her check-up after the brig, she still cared. But she wasn’t sure if what felt broken between them could be repaired. It was certainly a complicated thing.

Jasmine nodded to Cochrane and then smiled at the crowd. Her team, especially Shon, had gone over and above in the latest missions. Casting a glance at her colleague she winked at the Bolian. Without the both of them, the loss of life could have been more. She handed Max her box as she took a corner of her dress in one hand and his arm in the other. Watching a waiter pass by with a bottle of booze, she half thought about grabbing it an sticking it in her purse. Depending on how the meeting went tomorrow she might need it. Still no matter how the meeting with the boss went, the Manhattan was still the best place in the universe to work and that was never going to change.

As everyone made their way off stage, Cochrane said “We have one final award. As we stand in this beautiful space, most of us are aware that it exists only through the dutiful efforts of our own Lieutenant Calloway. And as some of you are aware, Lieutenant Calloway’s service to the ship and to Star Fleet encompasses far more than flowers and vegetables. She has proven herself time and again, and that dedication cannot go unrecognized any longer. Lieutenant Calloway, front and center please.” and he took the remaining small box from the tray.

Shara had quietly made her way over to the bar where Faye and Walker were still leaning, hiding in plain sight. She waved at Walker and stood next to Faye, smiling because she was just so happy to be here. Though as soon as it was reasonable, she entirely planned to sneak out and seek out the sometimes elusive Federation Security agent on board and see what he thought of her all dolled up.

But her attention was drawn when Cochrane began talking about Faye. She turned to her daughter who seemed lost in thought and was momentarily worried. She elbowed Faye. “Hey, he’s calling you. You’re up, Kid.”

Faye was just mulling over things in her mind when her reverie was broken and caught her mother’s words. “What? Oh!” Shit, she thought, thinking that was what she got for zoning out near the end of ceremonies like this. Setting her juice glass down, Faye made her way through the crowd in her black jumpsuit, the sequinned and beaded decorations catching the lights. Stepping up to the stage, she gave Alex a questioning look as she approached him.

Alex looked at her and smiled, then looked out at the crowd. “Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Lieutenant Calloway for all she has done for this ship… this crew… and the Federation. Her work will save countless lives, and it is because of that work and her tireless dedication to us all that I am please to announce that Lieutenant Calloway has been selected to attend Command Officer Training. And, as I have been directed to do by Admiral D’Tash of Star Fleet Command, it is my extreme pleasure to promote Lieutenant Faye Calloway to the rank of Lieutenant Commander… effective immediately.” He turned and handed Faye the open box with Lieutenant Commander rank pips inside and he held out his hand to her. “Congratulations, Lieutenant Commander Calloway.”

Cochrane, CO

Much like before, Faye wasn’t sure what to expect as she stood before him but unlike before she wasn’t so easily fazed by his pronouncement. But then again she was not the same woman who had stood on the stage in this very garden a month and a half ago. So much had changed since that ceremony. She had fallen hard and pulled herself back up… with a lot of help and care and love. And she had helped begin to process of taking down a group that sought to destroy the things that were precious to her. So instead of some offhand comment, Faye shook his hand with a bright smile on his face. “Thank you, Captain. I’m honoured.”

Letting his hand go, Faye then did something that was entirely uncharacteristic: she gave him a salute. Not just a cheeky one with a couple fingers, but a proper one. Still, it wouldn’t be Faye is it somehow was incongruous with her formal evening clothes and dark makeup.

Lt. Commander Calloway(!), Counter-Intelligence Officer

Cochrane drew himself up tall and straight, and returned the salute with military precision. As he dropped his hand, he smiled at her and said “You’ll need to work on that if you get sent to the War College, Lieutenant Commander.” The crowd erupted into cheers and applause, and Alex smiled at his friend.

“luq HoD!” Faye replied in a decent Klingon accent given she rarely got to use the language these days. In her freighter days it was abundantly handy, but not so much here unless they had a Klingon crew member she interacted with.

With a wink at Alex, Faye stepped off the stage and moved back to her spot at the bar, grinning.

Shara just pulled her in for a hug, whispering something in her ear that made Faye laugh aloud.
