Faye moved back to him after propping up the lovely flowers on the counter against the backsplash. “First, another kiss,” she said that strange giddy tone creeping back into her voice.

Dag grinned and said “Well… if I must.” and slipped his arms around her and pulled her to him, bent down, and kissed her, not caring that her mother was standing there… with a knife by her hand.

It was hard to explain but when he kissed her like that it felt like everything in the Universe was okay, the way it was supposed to be. “Mmm, hi,” she said softly, gazing up at him. Back at her cutting board, Shara just smiled to herself.

“And then if you don’t mind, I need someone to start cooking the vegetables while I make the dough for the wraps. And she’s not allowed to cook.”

“No cooking implements for me,” Shara said with a wink in Daggum’s direction as she picked up the knife again and set about chopping the vegetables that Daggum needed to cook.

Faye just shook her head, but she was grinning. If nothing else, her mother was entirely irrepressible. “We’ll probably want on of Harv’s extra large skillets. Medium heat with some oil in the pan once it warms up. Sautee and try to get things evenly cooked. We’ll add the special brine at the three-quarter mark.”

“Yes Chef!” Daggum said loudly and then chuckled. “Sorry. I watch a lot of Dante’s Kitchen on my off time. That Rordan Gamsey is such a stickler…” He went over and pulled out the biggest skillet he could find, which was actually a massive paella pan, but he carried it like a skillet. He set on the induction heater and then grabbed a bottle of olive oil and splashed some in the pan. “Ready for those veggies… Mom.” he said to Shara, and then looked at Faye and smirked and winked.

Daggum

Faye snorted as she found a bowl to make the flatbread in and turned to watch her mother’s reaction. Shara lifted the cutting board, side stepped towards Daggum and, with the back of a knife, scrapped the full board into the pan. “There you go, Son.”

Daggum chuckled. “Usually when people call me that, there are three words that immediately follow.”

“We all have our moments,” was all Shara said in reply.

Spatial anomaly? Nah, not likely. Temporal anomaly? Stranger things had happened. As Faye measured out some water she realized what was weirding her out. “It feels natural,” she said softly, really to herself.

Shara, with her keen hearing turned to Faye. “What feels natural?”

Faye gestured to the three of them with a floured hand. “Us. Here…”

“But?” Shara said, her expression sobering, seemingly already knowing what Faye was going to say.

“He’s not here,” she said, forcing herself to breathe deeply.

Shara set her knife down and crossed the kitchen, pulling Faye into a tight embrace and kissing her forehead. “Yes, he is. You’re cooking, Faye. You certainly didn’t get that from me,” she said, pulling back and smirking.

As she moved back to her station Shara gazed deeply at Daggum. “Edward would have liked you too,” she said as she went back to her vegetables. After all, they had a lot of hasperat to make.

“I would hope so…” and he looked at Shara and smiled. He stirred the vegetables for a moment and then said to the room at large “So Faye… did you tell your mom about dinner?” and he grinned.

Daggum

Faye was watching, no studying, her mother as she began to knead the dough. It was such that his question hit her brain and sat in the queue for a moment before she looked up at Dag. “Hmmm, oh… uhhh, well, yes and no. I told her how pretty I looked and how amazing you looked in a kilt,” she said, flashing a thumbs up at him. “But the rest, I might not have dipped too deeply into the dinner, the wormhole- that was crazy by the way, whew good mind dump!- and the walk through the arboretum, and there is that whole part where we talk about the future and how ours seems to have collided and that we want a future together and well, I think we just sort of both, you know, drew the same conclusion. And with about as many words as I just said.”

Shara popped a bite of one of the crunchy vegetables into her mouth. “Does that mean you’re engaged?” she said idly, a smirk pulling at her mouth.
