“Okay,” Faye said with a beaming smile, letting him lead her along. They really were having this conversation and it seemed at least that there was a general openness to the idea of kids. Huh. Wonders never ceased. It hadn’t even been intentional on her part, but once her mind had gone down that particular track, it had seemed unfair to him to not complete it.

“And for the record, I had an amazing childhood. The rest might have been messy, but most of it had been really great. My parents did the best they could under some extraordinary circumstances, and the more my mom and I talk, the more I realize that they were just winging it as best they could. They both had really rough childhoods and all they wanted for their only child was for her to be happy. And I was, and I am. The murky middle? Not their fault. So… what I’m trying to say Dag, is that I know what a great childhood looks and feels like. I know it enough for the both of us, so… I don’t think that’s something you need to worry about. I think you’d make a great parent.” She was on the fence about herself, mostly because of her mixed-up neurotic scientist brain, but she wasn’t sure how much of her fears there were really founded.

Daggum smiled and led her off the ‘path’ and through some of the foliage. “Thanks, Faye. I think you’d be a fantastic mom, too.” and he looked back and grinned.

Two months ago she would have dismissed the notion entirely, but now? Well, many things had changed and been revealed. And so she had less doubts than before. Not none, but less.

“Hope they get your hair, though.” and he winked.

Faye snorted. Parenting was one thing, genetics were another. Another question for another day.

At that moment, he pulled back a thick group of hanging ivy and they stepped into a small central clearing. A small waterfall,maybe eight feet high, fell into pool of clear water and added mist to the air which fed moss that surrounded the pool. Large multi-colored koi-like fish swam in the pool, and every now and then one would send out a flash of light matching the colors of its scales.

“Ohhh!” she exclaimed as she stepped through into the little hidden spot.

“Can you imagine having something like this on a ship?!” he asked in obvious awe.

“One and a half metres. I needed another metre and a half of deck height in order to pull it off,” she said with a grin. “Had to settle for the stream that runs down The Hill into the pond. But I really did try at first to make a waterfall work. And even if I could, it wouldn’t have been this high unless we did away with The Hill, and I wanted a view of some kind. Had to prioritize.” She moved around carefully with her bare feet, letting toes touch the soft moss.

Turning, she drew closer and gazed up at him. “Kiss me like no one’s around,” she said with a grin. And of course they were alone, and the likelihood of someone finding them here rather small, but it was fun to say.

“No one is… part of the deal.” he said with a smile and he pulled her close, lowered his lips to hers, and kissed her. It was intimate… desirous… and wholly encompassing. His arms pulled her to him firmly, pressing her against him and he moaned softly. Slowly, he ran his hands down her sides to her hips, then around and under… and lifted her up off the ground so they were on equal height. He broke the kiss just long enough to whisper “I love you, Faye Calloway…” and then he kissed her again.
