It was part way through their walking (and lovely kissing) that Faye realized something odd… her brain had stopped calculating and thinking in the background. It was much like is was when she did yoga. All the extraneous thoughts just meted away. She wasn’t a different person, just more of her at her core was allowed to be present.
She broke into a wide grin and chuckle.d more to herself than anything. “Walking meditation…” she mused aloud.

“Nothing quite like the feel of real wilderness under your feet, is there?” Daggum asked rhetorically. He looked down at her and said “What if you could spend part of your life exploring the Stars, and part in a cabin in the woods? Think you’d balance the time between the two? Or would one overshadow the other?”

Faye seemed to ponder that for a few moments and as she did she reached out and let her fingers brush the bark of one of the trees. “Maybe,” she said honestly. “I’ve always felt, I dunno, restless. My dad used to say my mom and I have always had a strong case of wanderlust. But I don’t think it’s quite that simple. Ask me again at or after the wake. I think I’ll be able to answer more clearly.”
She quirked a smile. “But I could never live in the woods. At the edge would be good. A place for a garden and visual space. I’d feel too claustrophobic, otherwise. But the woods are right there and the-” She stopped, her words with her? He said fully honest, right. She promised. “It should be a right of passage as a kid to learn to climb a tree.” She didn’t look at Dag, but rather her fingers once again sought the reassuring sensation of bark against her fingertips.

Daggum leaned his shoulder against the same tree and looked down at her. “And to learn to swim, too, I think.” And he looked up, through the ceiling and out at the stars around them.
“Yeah,” she said softly. “Essential skills, I think.”
“You know, I wondered from time to time what I could ever teach any kid I might have. Never had a parent… no clue how to do that. Not even a rudimentary one. But I’ve had a few friends with children. So I know I at least make a good walking playground for them to climb on.” and looked back at her and smiled. He took her hand and lifted it to his lips, kissed it gently, and said “C’mon, one more spot to show you…” and he led her towards the center of the garden.

“Okay,” Faye said with a beaming smile, letting him lead her along. They really were having this conversation and it seemed at least that there was a general openness to the idea of kids. Huh. Wonders never ceased. It hadn’t even been intentional on her part, but once her mind had gone down that particular track, it had seemed unfair to him to not complete it.
“And for the record, I had an amazing childhood. The rest might have been messy, but most of it had been really great. My parents did the best they could under some extraordinary circumstances, and the more my mom and I talk, the more I realize that they were just winging it as best they could. They both had really rough childhoods and all they wanted for their only child was for her to be happy. And I was, and I am. The murky middle? Not their fault. So… what I’m trying to say Dag, is that I know what a great childhood looks and feels like. I know it enough for the both of us, so… I don’t think that’s something you need to worry about. I think you’d make a great parent.” She was on the fence about herself, mostly because of her mixed-up neurotic scientist brain, but she wasn’t sure how much of her fears there were really founded.
