Daggum looked down at her and his hand came up and brushed her cheek. “I love you, Faye Calloway. And I don’t know why you would do that… because I am kind of awesome.” and he grinned. He reached down and grabbed a leg of her chair and without effort simply slid her next to him. He reached over and slid her plate over to her. “You know, I see couples do this all the time and for some reason it always struck me as odd. Why would you sit next to each other? Wouldn’t that make talking that much harder?” and he looked at her and leaned in and kissed her lips softly. Pulling back just enough that his lips brushed hers as he whispered, he said “But now? Now I completely get it.” and he kissed her again.

Kissing him felt like they were sealing some sort of agreement, and maybe they were. Wasn’t this whole week together supposed to be about exploring? This was just another piece of that exploration. An unexpected and slightly intangible piece, but a piece nonetheless. “Mmm, yes, I’m inclined to agree,” she murmured, before kissing him even deeper.

But, dinner, their delicious dinner. “On the other hand, there is something to be said for space,” Faye breathed.

Daggum smiled and said softly “As you wish.” and the arm dropped and the chair slid back around, but his eyes never left her. “But after ‘space’… and our meal… we do some more of that. Because that is better than any food I’ve ever had.” and he smiled at her.

“Agreed,” she said with a grin, a small thread of anticipation beginning to wind through her.

“So… hurry up.” and he laughed and took a bite of the beef tips.

Faye giggled (still a weird sound to her own ears) and dug back into their main course.

After a moment or two of linger silence, Daggum said “So what do you see as the future?”

Finishing a bite, Faye was thoughtful. “I didn’t. Not for a long time. The future was something inaccessible and for a long time I assumed there might not be one. But as that has changed and as I’ve learned to live, what is it, my fifth life now? The future is at least mostly in the stars, letting myself learn what they still have to teach me. And while I haven’t thought specifically about a life with someone, I think back to my childhood, to before the DMZ and the Maquis and I think’ Damn there were some really great things about that’. And so I guess living a life that where I can ground myself by working with my hands, and at the same time keep my mind happy. I definitely want to do the Starfleet captain thing, but the rest of it is a little more elusive. But I also have learned that if I let myself, I’m actually pretty good at teaching things to people too.”

“You are multi-faceted, that is for certain.” Daggum said as he finished up the last of his entree. “You know, I can’t see either of us not being in Star Fleet for the foreseeable future. So I guess its a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, if it wasn’t for Star Fleet, I may have never found you on the Manhattan? And on the other… well… that means unless we do end up… you know… married… we are gong to have a lot of time apart.” and a shadow passed over his face.

“Yeah,” she said quietly. That part was hard to think about now that they were in each other’s presence and not just talking over subspace.

“Complete honesty always between us… ok?” he asked, and there was a hint of trepidation in his voice.

Faye reached up and brushed his cheek with the back of fingers. “Of course. It’s the only way this is going to work at all. What’s on your mind, Gem?”
