Daggum wiped his fingers on his napkin and adjusted his bulk in his seat. “Ok… a future. Until a month ago, this was the plan. Steady increase in responsibility and rank until Admiral. Then start my own shipping company… maybe consult instead, depending on my age. Spend my golden years writing my memoirs and exploring my vast array of comics. So that was until a month ago. Now? Now I do all of that with you. Or something else… with you. Now, I am not keen on giving up my dreams… but dreams change. And my future now? That is a future with you. What that is, I don’t know yet. But I really excited about figuring that out together.”
Daggum
Faye smiled. That wasn’t so bad. She wasn’t sure what she expected him to say but she had braced herself for something more intense. And having learned from the mussel, she had set her fork down while he had been talking. “That sounds like a lovely idea.”
Leaning in her seat a bit, Faye gazed grinned. “So… shipping company. Been there done that. Well, I never ran one, but I worked freighters. Somewhere out there is a captain who called me the and a quote ‘best damn deckhand he ever had’. That was back in my super moody post-Kodell days, of course,” she said with a wider grin.

Daggum smiled and said “Then you are in charge of training.” and he waited until she had taken a bite and chewed several times before he added with a smile “Oh, I fully intend to marry you someday, too. Just so you know.” and he grinned as he took a drink and looked at her over the rim of the glass.
Daggum
Faye stopped chewing mid-bite as his words hit her ears. Then she resumed chewing while her mind flicked a switch and began calculating, her eyes not fixed but gazing towards her shallow bowl. Multiple scenarios sprung forth and her neurotic brain swept down each pathway trying to figure out where the trick was, where the part was where a reverse course and change in path would avoid a pain she couldn’t bear. There were none. To her surprise, there were no bad scenarios. Differing kinds and different qualities, and sure later she could probably come up with some terrible outcomes, but in this moment, dressed up and feeling more beautiful than she ever had before and having an extraordinary meal with a man she loved more than she knew was possible, Faye didn’t care for those bad outcomes. They meant nothing.
Finishing chewing and swallowing, she nodded. “Okay,” Faye said simply and then took a sip of water.

Now it was Daggum’s turn to choke as he was swallowing, gasped in surprise at her response, inhaled water and began to cough. He set the water down hard and grabbed his napkin, covering his mouth and turning away from the table. H coughed hard for a few moments and then gradually started to calm… and then he started laughing softly.
Though she was concerned, Faye could tell it wasn’t serious and he was okay. But still, it was weird being on this end of the exchange. “Dag?” she asked, suddenly uncertain. Maybe it had been the wrong thing to say? Nah, he was laughing.
“Faye… I was expecting you to shoot mussels out of your mouth, not just accept that as fact… even though it is from where I sit. I was telling you the truth… but I was also trying to tease you a bit.” and he sat up and wiped tears from his eyes with his napkin, smiling broadly the whole time. He looked at her and shook his head. “I look forward to a lifetime of you turning the tables on me, Faye… really.”
Daggum
Her expression slipped into a lopsided smirk. “Well, it seemed the only response because I tried looking for any reason that being together would be bad and… I couldn’t find one,” she said quietly, her eyes fixed on him. Yes, she was overwhelmed, but it wasn’t gong to hurt her.
Shifting out of her chair, she shimmied it over a bit so she could sit closer to him for a moment. Pale eyes fixed on him, Faye was very serious. “I was right when I told Luke we couldn’t make each other happy. Hell, it’s been something often repeated in therapy that’s really stuck. You don’t make me happy. I realized that in my quarters, with you and Tess holding space for me. I didn’t want to say anything about it, but that casual slip about the future then really triggered me, Dag. But the process of you and Tess holding space me told me everything I’ve needed know. And then in the holosuite, just the simple loveliness of being together reinforced that I was safe with you. You could have walked away many times already. Many other people would have. But still, you don’t make me happy. I was already happy. I told Alex the day we brought my system online. I’m happy, on my own and that was before the chaos of the last couple months. And now I’m happy here with you. Before the whole thing with the brig, and Luke, and my… well, breakdown, I wouldn’t have have seen the difference. But I see it now. So yes, if I can continue being happy with you, why would I deny myself something so wonderful?”
