Daggum looked at her and smiled and laughed. “I didn’t know what happened, but that look was something!” and he laughed a bit more, but stopped (mostly) when one server arrived and cleared and another set the entrées down. The Beef tips both had ordered smelled amazing, and bottle of (none dissappearing) water was set between them.

“Later. Still processing,” she said with a final chuckle and a sigh.

Daggum looked at Faye and said “Ok, let’s get this settled. Beef… what temp do you like it cooked and why is well-done wrong?” and he grinned.

Daggum

She shuddered. “Rare to medium-rare, though I prefer mine towards medium-rare. Well seared crust and nicely pink in the middle. . Well-done is just a waste of meat and given that I grew up having to hunt or trap our meat, I’m very particular about not wasting any food.” Faye learned towards him with a mischievous look on her face. “Do I get to stay at the table?”

Daggum matched her lean and grinned. “Oh, you do indeed. So now its your turn… ask away. Anything, my love. What do you want to know?”

Daggum

For a moment it was easy to think he was still playing, and she was all for it, but his question seemed to be deeper. As Faye stabbed one of the tender tips with the tines of her fork (making sure to grab a mushroom), she was thoughtful. In fact she popped the bite into her mouth and chewed, sighing with happiness at the beautiful food. This place was something special and she never would have thought to come here on her own. After swallowing, she gazed at Daggum. “When you think of the future, what do you envision. What does it look like. And I’m nt talking about us specifically, just in general. What is it that you want?”

Daggum arched an eyebrow and nodded in appreciation of the… intensity… of the question. He leaned back, took a bite of food and chewed thoughtfully. His eyes never left hers. A serious question deserved serious consideration.

Taking a drink, he said “I’m gonna need you to be more specific. Do you mean just me? And how far in the future? And can I include us in it as well? Or will that be too much for a first date?” and he smiled and gave her a wink.

Daggum

It was a good counter-question and one she appreciated. He was quickly figuring out how much of anything might overwhelm her, but of course it was never a straight-forward thing. Even earlier today when he had dropped his little bomb she had spun out quickly, but since then, since the holodeck, everything felt more clear, more calm. Like she was happily floating along the surface of the water rather than swimming against the tide.

Inhaling slowly, Faye shook her head. “No, not too much. Maybe I’m hesitating a bit because I hear people have these sort of idea of their lives where they know they want to settle down, get married have six kids. They know. But for me it’s always been situational. So if the future is situational for you as well, because we’re together now against seemingly impossible odds, then, sure, show me a future. What does that look like?” she said, and then dug back into her very delicious meal.

Daggum wiped his fingers on his napkin and adjusted his bulk in his seat. “Ok… a future. Until a month ago, this was the plan. Steady increase in responsibility and rank until Admiral. Then start my own shipping company… maybe consult instead, depending on my age. Spend my golden years writing my memoirs and exploring my vast array of comics. So that was until a month ago. Now? Now I do all of that with you. Or something else… with you. Now, I am not keen on giving up my dreams… but dreams change. And my future now? That is a future with you. What that is, I don’t know yet. But I really excited about figuring that out together.”

Daggum

Faye smiled. That wasn’t so bad. She wasn’t sure what she expected him to say but she had braced herself for something more intense. And having learned from the mussel, she had set her fork down while he had been talking. “That sounds like a lovely idea.”

Leaning in her seat a bit, Faye gazed grinned. “So… shipping company. Been there done that. Well, I never ran one, but I worked freighters. Somewhere out there is a captain who called me the and a quote ‘best damn deckhand he ever had’. That was back in my super moody post-Kodell days, of course,” she said with a wider grin.
