Faye laughed lightly. “I get where she is though. I know it well. Give her time Dag. Unrequited love is really hard, and sometimes, for me at least, I assumed what I was feeling was love because someone showed me more care than I was accustomed to. It’s easy to get it mixed up. Whatever it is for her, if she’s meant to be a friend or whatever, she needs time. When she’s ready, you’ll know,” she said softly digging into her mussels again.
“You know the funny thing about everything I went through? Alex anticipated my wanting to do Command training. But not only that, I now find myself turning to that part of me that will one day be Captain Calloway and trying to puzzle out what she would do,” she said softly, her tone pensive. “And I think I can only access her when everything slows down. I feel calmer now than I have since I was a kid. And I know it has a lot to do with my not feeling like the rug’s going to be pulled out from underneath me at any second. I have spent me entire adult life feeling that way and right now I’m just savouring it. And if you need to borrow some of my calm when I have it, it’s all your,” she said brightly.

“I’ll take all of it I can get.” and he popped the mussel in his mouth and nodded. “Ok, that’s good.” he said after swallowing. He watched her for a few moments and then smiled and took a drink. “You’re going to be a great Captain, Faye. I’d happily serve under you.” and he blushed slightly. “You know what I mean, regardless of how that sounded.” and he chuckled. “Maybe the Manhattan could be yours one day… you never know.” and he grinned.

Faye had popped another mussel into her mouth when he had backtracked on the possible double entendre. One involuntary snort and the damn thing slipped back. It hit the back of her throat har and stuck for a second as Daggum mentioned her as a possible captain for the Manhattan. She drew in a thin breath, and she could have been fine there, but the damn thing lid down her throat… slowly. It as that uncomfortable feeling of something hard in your esophagus that was taking its sweet time going down. Faye reached for her water and went to sip but it was empty. She sucked in a breath as she set the glass down hard on the table and croaked, “Water… please!”

Daggum looked confused but the he grabbed his water glass and handed it to her. “Here here here…” and he helped her lift the glass.
Faye took a generous swallow. And then another, and lowered the glass, faintly embarrassed, but only a little. The mussel was down and the slight burning in her throat had eased, but there was that soreness where it had gotten stuck.
“Holy s&^%… are you okay?” he asked with both a bit of concern and a bit of amusement.
Daggum
Faye blew out a breath. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just you…” She started laughing. “You made the joke and I…” More laughter. “And then you said about the ship…” At this point Faye just started laughing uncontrollably. To the point of tears too. The whole thing was just damn funny!

Daggum looked at her and smiled and laughed. “I didn’t know what happened, but that look was something!” and he laughed a bit more, but stopped (mostly) when one server arrived and cleared and another set the entrées down. The Beef tips both had ordered smelled amazing, and bottle of (none dissappearing) water was set between them.
“Later. Still processing,” she said with a final chuckle and a sigh.
Daggum looked at Faye and said “Ok, let’s get this settled. Beef… what temp do you like it cooked and why is well-done wrong?” and he grinned.
Daggum
She shuddered. “Rare to medium-rare, though I prefer mine towards medium-rare. Well seared crust and nicely pink in the middle. . Well-done is just a waste of meat and given that I grew up having to hunt or trap our meat, I’m very particular about not wasting any food.” Faye learned towards him with a mischievous look on her face. “Do I get to stay at the table?”
~Faye Calloway
Daggum matched her lean and grinned. “Oh, you do indeed. So now its your turn… ask away. Anything, my love. What do you want to know?”
