A wide, sincere and warm smile spread across her face, and once again she was just in awe. But not just of Dag, of them. “I love you Daggum Hammor. I’ve loved before but this? This just might be the first time I’ve ever accepted it fully. I can’t say I won’t have my doubts and I won’t have days where I’m symptomatic and am bent on testing you to make sure you’ll stay, because it will happen. But when they do”-she lifted their conjoined hands and kissed his knuckles with her dark red-black lips-“remember this moment, this dinner, this night, where everything is exactly as it should be. And I don’t make promises Dag. I rarely have in my life unless I knew I could keep them. So hear this with everything I mean it to be.... I promise you that no matter what, I’ll always find my way back to the light, to our light. I have no more secrets left other than the ones the Romulans put in my head, and those have no bearing on us. I have lots of stories still to share, or extensions of some of the ones i’ve already told you, but I feel safe, and accepted, and cared for. I didn’t know I was looking for you all this time, but here you are. And I will never stop being soooo incredibly grateful you called me exactly when you did. My Mushroom Boy. My Gem.” Yep, sappy. And she loved every moment of it.

Daggum smiled and the scooted his chair back and leaned over and kissed her fully and deeply. He pulled back a moment later and said “Hold that thought… it’s almost time, my love.” and he sat back down and looked at their crystal glasses.
At first, nothing happened....
Then there was a soft pop and silver cracks appeared in each glass, spider webbing through the container… but no water came out. Instead, a soft vapor of crimson and pink and blue glittery sparkles started to arise from them. Soon, it seemed the glasses were erupting… but they were shrinking. As the vapor leapt to the ceiling and disappeared, the sparkles fell down like soft rain and the they too disappeared. In a few moments, the water and the glasses were gone as if they had never been.
Startled and yet mesmerized, Faye looked up and delighted etched itself into face. Of course he knew she’d spend the next hours or days with a mental process on the back burner trying to work through that little trick. It would drive her nuts to not even try. But the whole ephemeral sequence was like a beautiful orchestration set ot a beat no one could hear. When she turned her head to him, Faye was entranced.
Daggum looked at Faye throughout the display and when it ended he said “I love you. Through this or any other life you want to have with me.”

Oh the impulse to say something she couldn’t process! It didn’t mean it wouldn’t be honest, but without the emotions backing the thought, it wouldn’t be substantial enough to be the promise it needed to be. Apparently she could only make so many declarations at once. “To the stars and back, Gem,” she said finally, emphatically.
A few moments later, the servers came back with their next course and Faye was actually looking forward to the mussels despite how messy they could be. And here she was in a ballgown!
“So… your turn, Dag,” Faye said seriously, though there was still a warm smile on her face. “Tell me about this other woman who loves… loved you? I’m assuming it’s not the kissing XO,” she teased.

The server cleared the appetizers and set down Faye’s mussels and Daggum’s prawn cocktail. He looked at the bright yellow and star shaped prawns and cocked an eyebrow at them. “Well those are certainly different. Trade you for a mussel?” he offered, looking at steamed shells that were opened revealing a dark green and orange striped meat inside.
“So… her name is Viyara. She’s a forensic scientist. Oh, and that whole XO kissing me thing? Yeah… so apparently she can’t control her empathic abilities and sometimes when she makes physical contact with someone their emotions overwhelm her. She was standing on her desk… my eyes were at butt level… she fell… I caught her… that flash of ‘Hey, nice butt.’ turned into overwhelming lust and she laid one on me. We’re good now, though. Bit awkward, but managing.” and he chuckled and took a bite, nodding approval as he chewed. Swallowing and taking a drink, he said “So Viyara… she and I were having a lunch on the station. People kept assuming we were a couple, so I got an idea that we should run with that. There is a great hotel and spa there, so I played the honeymoon card to get us a deal on massages and such. Well…” and he smiled sheepishly.
“One thing leads to another and we hook up. She was adamant that she didn’t want anything emotional, and that was fine with me. I even told her I was interested in someone else. So we played the honeymoon couple, ended up getting a room comped and all these things thrown in. We had a very nice time, and we got comfortable with each other and shared some stuff. She had it really hard growing up. Didn’t specify, but I think there was some physical abuse. So she is really closed off but slowly opening up. We spend the night, leave the next morning and go back to the ship. Next day, maybe the day after, she calls and says she’s in trouble and needs help. I go to her quarters and she’s been running some kind of experiment and its gone sideways. Burned table, burned carpet, broken chair… and she is freaking out. I get her calm, call my team to replace the furniture, no problem. Offer to go to lunch while its getting handled. We go, and she is really off. We eat and then I go back with her to see the room… done. No harm, no foul. She asks if she can talk to me, and I say sure… and then BAM. It just slips out while she’s talking. Faye… she was so embarrassed.” HIs voice was filled with empathy for her, but only as someone who hates to see people in pain. “I tried to get her to not feel weird, but she kept spiraling and spiraling. I got her as calm as I could, made sure she went to see the Counselor… and then we haven’t really spoken much. I ask her how she is, brief chat here and there… but nothing else. Not sure how to proceed. And then thats when the XO kissed me and I called you because I just needed to here you because everything had gone crazy and I needed to find my center.” and he took a drink. “So that is my tale of romantic crashes.” and he looked at Faye and smiled.
“Guess it just wasn’t destined to be.” and he winked.
