Daggum shrugged. “Its okay. I’ve completed my Command Course and had a really good recommendation from Admiral Hallsley. But now?” and he picked a bit of bread, spread some cheese from the charcuterie on it and took a bite and chewed slowly. Nodding in appreciation, he slid the small tray to the middle of the table and gestured for Faye to try.

Faye sampled some of the cheese, knowing her mussels would come with some bread and she drank heavily from her glass, mindful of the ten minutes. Mmm, summer in a glass. It was indeed very special.

Swallowing, he said “Now, I really don’t know. The Athena had this really amazing CO… like I read about her in Command School amazing. So I was really excited ot work under her; but two days after I arrive BAM… she resigns and leaves the ship. So now we have a new CO and XO, and I’m not sure where I really fit in. We don’t have a Second Officer, so I am on the fence of do I just go to the CO and XO and ask them for it? Or do I wait till they decide they need one and then just apply. I dunno… not kowing them I don’t have a good idea on how to do it.”

Daggum

“Easy,” Faye said, piercing another orange with her fork. “You give a bit of time for the dust to settle, show them what you’re capable of and then ask. The worst they can say is no, right? And it’s not like you’d lose your position by asking,” she said thoughtfully before popping the orange into her mouth. She had dealt with changing COs in a very similar way to him and it had worked out just fine. Hell, hers was one of her best friends and her mentor!

“I’ll take that under advisement.” and he winked at her. “But now… I want to talk about you. And maybe now you’d want to tell me about this Security guy you talked about? And hey… I am not upset or jealous, okay? Well… maybe jealous.” and he smiled. “I just want to know what you were feeling and what changed… and if it’s too soon, tell me to shut up. I’m good with that too. I just know you’ve had a lot of changes… and I want you to know that this-” and he pointed back and forth between them, “- isn’t going to change again. This is here and this isn’t going anywhere.”

Faye nodded and drained the rest of her unique mineral water. “It’s okay, we can talk about it,” she said softly, though she ate her last piece of orange and finished swallowing before she continued. “Luke, first off… he’s moved on to another assignment, and while we never got to sort things out between us properly, I’m… okay with that. You help,” she said with a warm smile.

When she continued, her eyes shifted, and though they were distant, she was still present. It was more like she was working through a puzzle. Finally she shook her head. “When he first came aboard, he discovered that I had my lab and it was locked… for reasons obvious to those in the know. But he couldn’t stand that, Dag. Oh my God the very fact that I had stuff going on that no one decided he got to know?” She chuckled. ” He kicked my lab door! He wanted in and couldn’t get in. And I very calmly came to the door and explained who I was and that my work was restricted knowledge and he wasn’t on the list and he could take it up with the captain if he wanted. And that was how we met.” Of course there was more, but Dag understood her well enough that no only did she would suffer no fools, but that antagonism was the old usual. She had left that behind when she had arrive don the Manhattan.

“We had other interactions and they were… mixed. It wasn’t that we hated each other or anything but we rubbed each other the wrong way while at the same time there were… moments.” Faye sighed and looked up at Daggum. “How much do you actually want to know?” She didn’t want to hurt him after all, but Luke was complex and at the end of the day had been one of her symptoms and triggers.
