“Oh, a race!” she said with a laugh. “I’m game. Show me this magic of yours.” Faye’s expression was rather intense and though she couldn’t quite explain it, something about Daggum truly was magical.

He poured her and his crystal glass full glass full and said “Now… look at the water.”

The water in the crystal had somehow reacted and it was now an iridescent and sparkling deep crimson red, like a merlot with glitter dust.

Lowering her head and tilting it to the side, Faye watched as the liquid began changing before her very eyes. Her mouth dropped open slightly. “A chemical reaction instigated by…” She shook her head. Nope, she had seen ingredients react and change when they touched each other, but a liquid inside a particular surface? That was new.

“Now try it.” and he raised his glass to her and then took a drink.

Fruit punch. That was the only way to describe the flavor. Sweetness of berries, tang of citrus, even a slightly herbal overtone. It was, in a word… delicious.

“Well? What do you think of it so far?” he asked

Daggum

Taking her glass, Faye sipped. And then again, letting the ‘water’ fill her mouth and activate her taste buds. Her eyes were a mix of awe and confusion and when she looked up at Daggum, Faye was clearly mystified. “It tastes like summer. A hot humid summer day where you laze about with something cold and the air itself becomes… the air. The air is another ingredient with the glass maybe?” She pressed her lips together, suddenly lost down a particular problem solving track.

Daggum watched her study the concoction, and he smiled. For as much as he wanted her all to himself, to be the center of her everything… he knew he couldn’t be. Her mind craved stimulation. Problems, experiences, new things to ponder and pursue. His job now… and for as long as she would have him… was to make sure those things brought her joy, not heartache and pain.

“Remember… ten minutes.” and he grinned.

Faye blew out a breath. “Not enough time. It’s almost mean,” she said, slipping into a grin before she sipped it more. “Then again, I’m all prepared for a possible day where I’m on a timer if my system activates. Gotta be prepared.”

But just because her drink was on a timer, didn’t mean she couldn’t enjoy her appetizer as well. Faye cut into the delicately spiced orange segments and popped a piece in her mouth. She groaned with pleasure at the wonderful mix of heat and sweetness. Cutting another piece off, she set it on one of the sharing plates. “You have to try that,” she said with a grin. It’s not hasperat, which remind me to make for you while you’re here, but it’s very good.”

“I don’t know what that is but I really want to know now.” he said with a grin and took the bite. His eyes went wide and he said “That’s great. I wonder if you could just do a glass of the juice.”

Sipping more of her drink and alternating the oranges, Faye gazed at Dag. “So… work stuff. How’s that path looking for you lately?”

Daggum shrugged. “Its okay. I’ve completed my Command Course and had a really good recommendation from Admiral Hallsley. But now?” and he picked a bit of bread, spread some cheese from the charcuterie on it and took a bite and chewed slowly. Nodding in appreciation, he slid the small tray to the middle of the table and gestured for Faye to try.

Swallowing, he said “Now, I really don’t know. The Athena had this really amazing CO… like I read about her in Command School amazing. So I was really excited ot work under her; but two days after I arrive BAM… she resigns and leaves the ship. So now we have a new CO and XO, and I’m not sure where I really fit in. We don’t have a Second Officer, so I am on the fence of do I just go to the CO and XO and ask them for it? Or do I wait till they decide they need one and then just apply. I dunno… not kowing them I don’t have a good idea on how to do it.”
