“Right after? Every night, multiple times. Was off active duty for a year getting used to the new hardware and psych evaluations. Lessened after a while. Now? Couple’a times a month maybe. More if I’m super-stressed.” He looked at her and smiled a warm smile.

“So what you’re saying is that there’s a good chance tonight you’ll be just fine,” Shara replied with a teasing grin. She wasn’t sure about her nightmares but she was relaxed and i a good enough mood that maybe they’d play ball.

“Your man, am I?” and he laid back and grinned.

Her mouth shifted into an ‘o’, her eyes suddenly confused.

“I like the sound ‘a that.”

For someone who was so careful with her words, Shara’s had been rather careless tonight at times. But they were no less honest, and wasn’t that when you had to pay the most attention. Still, she was treading where she could not let herself step. Right? It wasn’t an option.

But she wasn’t doing covert work anymore. She wasn’t going to be some fake-named person people would always forget because she made them forget her.
But it had been so long. And?
But.
But.

She didn’t have a quippy reply so Shara simply replied how she best felt she could: she leaned forward and kissed Micah, seeking the warmth and solidity of his lips.

“That’s my girl…” he murmured as her lips met his. He wrapped his arms around her and they fell slowly back, taking all the time they wanted…

Shara eventually pulled her head back from the kiss, not wanting for things to escalate, but she was calm, content even. “As much as I could keep that up for awhile, or more, I really do have to get some sleep,” she said softly. Was she nervous? A little. It had been a very long time since she had woken up next to someone in bed and that wasn’t even factoring in the potential for disrupted sleep. But she was willing to risk it for this unpredictable man.

Turning on her side away from Micah, she stayed close, and pulled her pillow more firmly under her head. “If I push you away at some point, don’t take it personally. I always did need my space.”

“Thats fine. Push all you want, girl. I can adapt. But until then…” and he slid over and put an arm around her. The motion was the same as when he had instigated one of their fist trusts. But the energy behind this one was softer… warmer… safer. “Get some shut-eye, gorgeous.” he said softly. “And don’t you worry about what the night brings… I’ll be right here.”

“Okay,” Shara said, shimming a bit to find that spot where his arm lay just perfectly that it felt like an extension of her own body. Closing her eyes and feeling safe and content and cozy, Shara let herself drift off.

Deep sleep came and went and for awhile it seemed as if her sleep would be peaceful. It was certainly more restful than it had been as of late, but as it had every night since she had arrived on the Manhattan, REM sleep became a trap.

Her sleep had been soundless, until her breathing picked up beyond what was typical for a dream state, her body twitching with occasional murmured and incomprehensible words…

Opening a mechanical handle on a door, Shara poked her head in. Nope, not there. She sprinted down the hall, a phaser rifle cradled against her body, fingers near the trigger. Where were they?

A second door. Another. And another. Finally entering a larger room at the end of the hallway, Shara had her rifle aimed and ready to fire. Her finger hovering over the trigger… and stopped when her quarry was in her sights. Relief flooded through her. She had made it in time!

Her head blossomed with pain and she cried out as she collapsed to the ground, everything spinning. More pain. But she struck out, gauging her opponent true and she heard a grunt as her vision cleared. The struggled ensued but Shara finished it quickly by ramming the butt end of her rifle into her opponents head. They went limp and stopped moving.

Shara wasted no time moving over farther into the room, since her quarry had taken their hostage out of her sights again. Rounding the corner, they stood there, a faceless form holding a very real knife to the throat of her only child. “Stop and drop your weapon or I slit her throat and then where will you be?” Faye was silent, though she looked terrified. Shara went to say something pithy in retort but came up with nothing. If she dropped her weapon it was all over for both of them. She couldn’t risk it, but she was a good shot and maybe she could get a shot out before he made good on his promise. But she couldn’t risk Faye. She hesitated.

“Time’s up!” he said as the knife dragged across Faye’s neck, blood blooming.

Shara went to scream but no sound came out. She was frozen as she watched him toss Faye to the side carelessly, her body crumpling on the ground, eyes wide and vacant.

The faceless one came upon her, grabbing her by the throat, once again promising death.

But it didn’t matter: she was already dead…

Shara’s murmurs stopped and she went suddenly very still in bed.

Micah woke when she first started moving. He laid still, letting her mind process whatever it was processing… even though he knew from experience that wasn’t always pleasant. But he also knew that to try and stop it and water then would either mean no more rest or the dream would just start over when she fell back asleep.

We she stopped moving, he still remained still. “Sha…” he whispered, trying to let her hear him from wherever she was. “Sha… you ain’t alone. And it ain’t real. You’re not there. And you and Faye are here.... safe. You won, Sha… come on back to me. You won… you and Faye are ok… come on back. Come back to me… you got this, love. Easy, babe…”

Shara was falling. Or was she sinking? Down, down, down in a seemingly unending motion until suddenly she was lying on the ground, but she couldn’t remember landing. Opening her eyes she saw grass and as her fingers stretched out, there was softness. She was lying on a blanket. The sun ducked in and out from behind light clouds and cast warmth on her skin. With a sigh, she closed her eyes, her limbs relaxing .

Shara’s breathing continued it’s frantic pace until it began to slow. Then, with a gentle exhale through softly parted lips, she rolled over onto her other side, facing Micah, her breathing even and deep.
