Faye laughed and it flowed through her body. Grinning madly, she shook her head. “You know, sometimes I don’t think I gave my father enough credit for being a balancing influence. He was the calm and quiet one. Mom was the passionate, pick a fight in the bar type. Much happier out of the woods than doing the more mundane chores of life in the settlement. And I kind of wonder whether her experiences and all the insane amount of training she’s had have actually changed her or it’s just the same and just well masked.” The lift opened and Faye stepped out, turning back swiftly enough that the skirt of of her dress flared out a bit as she did. “But either way, she’s been been interesting to get to know all over again.”

“I look forward to the process myself, then. Now… no more talk of anyone that isn’t us.” and he glanced up. “There’s the door.”

Okay, a caveat, she’d have to remember that one. It was a date after all and since Faye hadn’t experienced one before, she’d follow his lead.

A non-descript door at the end of the hall had softly glowing lettering above it: ‘The View’. A line of people stood along one side of the hall, and a Benkaran woman in an all-black dress stood at a podium by the door. Daggum led Faye up to her and smiled. “Lieutenant Commander Hammor. Resrvation for two.” Shesmuled and looked at the display and said “Yes, sir. One moment.” and a few seconds later the door slid open. “Sir, Madame.” said a tuxedoed Maitre’d. “Your table is ready. Please follow me. Watch your step.”

As they stepped through the door, they stepped into space.

Not really, but the wholly transparent floor and walls made it seem that way for a moment. Daggum rocked slightly and then chuckled. “Holy s%$t thats cool.” he whispered to Faye and then chuckled.

Faye’s boots clicked on the floor, but she stopped and her jaw dropped. She looked to Dag and then back at the vista, her breath momentarily caught in her throat.
“‘Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.’” Faye took a deep breath in and smiled up at Daggum.

They followed the man to the far side of the restaurant, where elegant partitions separated tables and provided some privacy to the diners. It was to one of these they were led and sat at. The wall before them curved gently and they had an uninterrupted view of the vastness of the cosmos.

Faye stood at their table for a moment and just looked around in awe. Her stars felt closer than ever. She used to have dreams about flying through them, unaware of the limitations of the vacuum of space, and she had had many a daydream about reaching up for them and claiming a place amongst them for herself. But she had never felt so deeply in space before. The darkness had come to life and it was beautiful.

Sitting, Faye was still in awe, but she managed a smile. This was the date part she was uncertain about, and in her formal gown there was a slight awkward sensation in her body. But for now she was also simply happy to be in his company and let the night take whatever shape it would. “This place is extraordinary,” she said as she set her clutch to the side, close at hand but out of the way.

Daggum looked at her and said “Yeah… still not as amazing as you, though.” and he winked.

Faye just gave him a lopsided grin.

“So, this is your first date ever? Man, kinda blew my big romantic gesture that soon… please don’t take that as personal trait.” and he grinned.

Faye laughed lightly. “Well, if it helps, I’ve had no expectations really, so I don’t think you blew anything,” she said softly.

“Well, at this point of the date, people tend to talk awkwardly about small things, trying to get a feel for each other and figure out what the potentialities may be between them. And kudos… we’ve done that already because we are so efficient. So now, we can just have dinner together and actually not worry about what the future may bring. But that leaves a very important question to answer…” and he took her hand and looked directly into eyes.

She squeezed her delicate fingers around his and looked expectantly. “Yes?”

”… what are you having for dinner?” and he grinned.

Leaving her gloved hand in his for the moment, Faye’s eyes widened. “Dinner! Is that what we’re doing here?” she said with feigned surprise. “Well, I suppose it depends what’s on the menu, now doesn’t it?” At this she just smiled deeply, her eyes intense.
