Faye was quiet as they walked in a way that felt very companionable and still was something of a new experience. “No, it’s not cheesy. I think I get it, even if I’m not sure I’ve had a similar experience. There was a moment in my last relationship, fling, affair- whatever you want to dub it- when we were in bed and he’d just look at me and I was less self-conscious, even if we were making jokes. The thing I’m trying to work on is to not discount the good bits because bad things happened. And because Nevol was playing me, it’s easy to see just the betrayals. But sometimes he’d look at me in those intimate moments and I just felt beautiful.” She sighed slightly. “That person with that body though came out of her time with the Romulans very different. And I can’t go back. So, Nevol, Kodell, Gods there were others, but they all showed me something I’m still trying to see. It just hasn’t quite come into focus yet.”

Kiama nodded thoughtfully while looking closely at her friend. “Give yourself time and when you are with Daggum or spending time with friends, maybe you’ll be able to see yourself how we see you. Of course I can only speak for myself, but I think you are a very beautiful woman; inside and out,” she replied softly as they arrived at her quarters. Opening the door, she moved her arm and took Faye’s hand instead as she led her into the room.

Faye could describe herself as many things, but beautiful was not one of them. But she was willing to concede that letting herself see herself as beautiful required her letting go of a few more things. And she would, that much she knew, but she also didn’t want to rush the process. And also in her mix of thoughts was how Kiama was a true friend. She knew what those were and Naim fit the bill. “I promise to keep trying,” she said at length.

“And that is all that matters,” Kiama said softly.

“Remind me later to show you picture of my mom when she was younger. Now she was someone many people in many cultures would deem stunning. Still is, too,” Faye commented as they entered Kiama’s room.

“Will do,” Kiama laughed. “And I agree, your mother is a very good looking woman.”

“Okay, noble lady, I’ve got the causal and dressy-casual clothes sorted, but I need semi-formal options and maybe a formal option as well. Help me figure out what looks good on me.” She grinned. “I’m looking for that moment where I stop him dead in his tracks ‘cause I look that good.”

“I’m confident we can achieve that,” Kiama grinned as she led Faye into her bedroom. Like the rest of her quarters it looked mostly like the bedroom in any senior officer’s quarters. Though with a few additions. The quilt on top of her bed was of a pale lilac colour with with vines and floral motives printed on it in dark purple. A book was sitting on the bedside table along with with a photograph of a small group of cadets, including Kiama. And a hint of lavender hung in the air.

Looking at Faye, Kiama asked, “So first question: Dress? Blouse or shirt and skirt? Or blouse or skirt and pants?” At the same time she opened her wardrobe, giving a Faye a full few of it’s content. There were a few dresses, skirts and blouses. Mostly in lighter colours, though also at least one black dress and a black skirt.
