Tess jumped up on to the bed, and with something of a strangely satisfied look, draped herself on Faye with her head on leg and began to purr again. Faye’s eyes slipped closed and that familiar feeling of shame washed over her. But there was also a sense of safety she knew she felt because of Daggum. She let him rock her and let herself surrender to that soothing sensation.
After some time (Faye rarely had a sense of it lately), she exhaled a breath with a sigh, snuggling in closer to him. “Irony of all ironies, I was trying to find a pendant to put on my chain. I forgot to bring it earlier and then… I had a moment, though not as bad as this, and thought it would be good to grab it just in case.” Tilting her head up to him, Faye couldn’t shake the sadness. “Intense emotions, even good ones can be difficult sometimes. Things are definitely better but I think I’m still in the weeds, Dag. And the thing about loving me is… this is a part of it,” she said, forcing her voice to be above a whisper. Faye was at ease in his presence, so she knew what was possible. And he had said he’d work through it all with her, but it was also a very different prospect when you encountered reality face to face.

Dag didn’t stop the rocking. He just pulled her close and took a breath.
“I know that, Faye. Doesn’t change a thing.” and he kissed her head and just letting her be for as long as she needed.

She stayed that way, listening to the thrumming of his heart, taking solace in that steady beat. His words were a soothing balm and of course they were exactly what she needed to hear, but she stayed next to him while she waited for the rest of her to believe them.
When she finally felt ready to move, Faye just leaned over and to the side, bracing one hand on the bed so she didn’t squish her cat who seemed unwilling to leave her side. She briefly kissed to top of Tess’ head. “Good girl, Tess. Thank you.” Whatever uncertainty she had had about the whole therapy animal thing had evaporated.
Swinging her body to the left towards her beside table, she was practically lying flat against her legs, a feat of flexibility borne over the years of her doing yoga. Reaching out, she rummaged with her fingers until she found the pendant.
Sitting up, she held it out to Dag. “Here, hold that for me a second will you?” It was a small clear capsule (maybe glass) nestled in a pewter filigree casing with a ornate top where the eye was to thread it onto something.
Faye reached up and pulled out a necklace from beneath her t-shirt. It was a silver IDIC symbol on a fine silver chain. Undoing the clasp, Faye held her hand out for the pendant. “The capsule contains a strong scent, in my case, orange blossom mixed with a tiny bit of clove. If you ever think I’m wearing perfume, I’m not. It’s this. Strong scents can help ground me and stop my mind from trying to escape whatever I’m feeling.”

“You sound better. Are you, now?” and he smiled at her. “I don’t mind sitting with you if you need it.” He reached out scratched Tess’s ears and then looked back at Faye.
“So is now the time to crack a joke about you finally getting me into bed? Or should I hold off for a bit?” and he grinned and winked at her.
