Daggum looked at the cat, his emerald eyes looking straight into the cat’s. He looked for a long minute before he said “Ok… that’s pretty freaking cute. I’m a fan.” and he smiled and looked at Faye. Even in the instant he did, his heart jumped and a shock went through his body. What is it about her that makes me feel like I’m being shocked in the best way possible? he thought to himself. His love for Faye radiated out of him and he said “Can I hold her?” and he held out a large green arm, more than wide enough to support the tiny ball of fur.

Daggum

“Of course,” Faye replied as she cradled Tess from underneath and handed her to Dag.

The half-ragdoll cat didn’t seem to mind being held at all, and in fact she relaxed quickly and all but draped over Daggum. With a little nudge of her nose on his arm, she began to purr.

Faye beamed and in watching the two together she couldn’t help but feel that all was right in the Universe. Tess was an unexpected part of her life and so was Dag. “Well, I think she likes you,” she said, reaching out to stroke Tess. “I think that means I’m allowed to keep you around,” she teased.

Dag stroked the cat’s fur and scratched gently behind her ears as she began kneading his arm lightly with her claws. “I guess so. She’s pretty cool, Faye.” and he leaned close to the cat and said “You’re gonna be my buddy, aren’t you? Make sure she’s taken care of while I’m not here? Yeah… and then I’ll come and bewith you both.” and he smiled. He looked at Faye and said “Why didn’t you bring her with you to the hotel? Wanted her to get used to the ship first or something?”

Daggum

Still with a smile on her fact, Faye nodded and reached out to stroke Tess’ head. “It’s a new setting and I didn’t want to confuse her too much. Besides, I wasn’t intending to spend much time in my room and it was better for her to have people like my mom and my friend Kiama check in on her. Tess can get to know people who are connected to me and I don’t have to worry too much about her.” Faye glanced down at the floor. “My duty boot socks on the other hand…”

Moving her hand to rest on Daggum’s arm, she just gazed at him a bit and shook her head. “I’ll be back in a second. Just need to grab something.”

Slipping into her bedroom, Faye was running over the exchange in her mins as she always did. The smile slipped. He then he’d what?! Stopping dead in her tracks, Faye hadn’t even made it to her bedside table. He’d come and be with them both? But what did that mean? Her breath was caught in her throat, and her heartbeat loudly in her ears. Controlling her exhale, Faye blew it out slowly and moved to her bedside table finally and crouched as she opened the upper drawer, hunting for her quarry, though her motions were slower.

Meanwhile, out in the living room, Tess suddenly squirmed in Daggum’s arms, letting out a plaintiff mew.

Daggum may have looked like a brute, but a fool he was not. He set Tess on the floor gently and watched and she bounded into the bedroom. “Hey… you ok in there, love?” he asked, a hint of concern in his voice.

Daggum

Faye’s fingers were rummaging through the drawer as Tess chirped and brushed against her leg. “Hmmm? Just looking for…” Faye sat back, her gaze fixed on the drawer. “Just looking for…” She had forgotten what she was looking for entirely and though her back was to Dag, her frown deepened.

But Tess was more insistent and rose her hind legs, her front paws on Faye’s thigh. Absentmindedly, Faye reached out and began to pet Tess, all the while a warm feeling settled inside her. It was soothing, like a cozy blanket and Faye’s shaky breathing began to even out and relax.

As Faye’s mind slipped back towards the tangible, a sinking feeling swept over her, though the warmth seemed to fight back. It took Faye a moment as she gazed down to realize that it was Tess. Tess was insisting on the cozy warm feeling. Faye chuckled, but it was sad and weary. “Well then…”

Looking back towards Dag and still crouched on the floor, Faye’s gaze was fixed on the carpet. Not even one whole day! She had waited for this, anticipated this time with him. “I’m… I’m sorry… just…” Words. Her mouth felt full, thick. They were harder than she liked right now and it would be really nice if she could spit out one full sentence. She knew he’d be worried but she wasn’t sure if she could explain.

Tess to the rescue though, she put her paws back on the floor and moved back to Dag, rubbing against him with an insistent meow.

Daggum nodded at the cat and moved to the bedroom. He looked and saw Faye crouched down and her eyes looking off in the distance. He didn’t say a word, just bent down and put his arms around her and lifted her off the floor and set her on the bed. He sat next to her, propped her up against him, and slowly rocked her without saying word.

Daggum

Tess jumped up on to the bed, and with something of a strangely satisfied look, draped herself on Faye with her head on leg and began to purr again. Faye’s eyes slipped closed and that familiar feeling of shame washed over her. But there was also a sense of safety she knew she felt because of Daggum. She let him rock her and let herself surrender to that soothing sensation.

After some time (Faye rarely had a sense of it lately), she exhaled a breath with a sigh, snuggling in closer to him. “Irony of all ironies, I was trying to find a pendant to put on my chain. I forgot to bring it earlier and then… I had a moment, though not as bad as this, and thought it would be good to grab it just in case.” Tilting her head up to him, Faye couldn’t shake the sadness. “Intense emotions, even good ones can be difficult sometimes. Things are definitely better but I think I’m still in the weeds, Dag. And the thing about loving me is… this is a part of it,” she said, forcing her voice to be above a whisper. Faye was at ease in his presence, so she knew what was possible. And he had said he’d work through it all with her, but it was also a very different prospect when you encountered reality face to face.

~Faye Calloway

Dag didn’t stop the rocking. He just pulled her close and took a breath.

“I know that, Faye. Doesn’t change a thing.” and he kissed her head and just letting her be for as long as she needed.
