“What is it they say? Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth,” Walker said as he pulled a PADD out of his kit. “Last I had checked there hadn’t been, but these engineers have never been known to do things the correct way…

“Now when did you say these issues started to come up?”

“Three days ago, according to my program logs. But the glitch is throwing up unusual errors which means it could have happened even a day or two before and taken that long to do something in the system.”

She sighed. “We can repair the matrix. I’d rather not have to, but I do want a working system that isn’t going to draw too much attention from those that shouldn’t be messing with it.”

“Oh I don’t think that it’s attracted any attention,” Walker said with a chuckle. “And I think that is the problem.”

Scrolling down the entire list of maintenance logs, he started looking 3 days prior. After a couple of minutes he stopped. “Well I’ll be, there was a regular maintenance activity logged to the power junction the next section over. Looks like the system had flagged fluctuations to a secondary coupler, and a repair team came out and replaced it. It was all routine, and nothing out of the ordinary, not to mention should not have resulted in this kind of result. But…” he ended with a shrug.

“Well,” he said tucking the PADD back in his kit, “beyond needing to review proper logging protocol with the engineering teams. I can get the ship side systems fixed pretty quickly. But how do we harden your tech so this won’t happen again?”

Pulling one knee up. Faye braced her arm on her knee as she pondered his very good question. She really did love a good troubleshooting situation but she would rather prefer it not be with her very delicate and necessary work. However, this was precisely why they had sent someone like her to design and implement the system. There was no one size fits all option her and everything had to function fluidly with the rest of the ship’s systems. “I like redundancies in these sorts of systems and there is a fair number of them, but the issue is that the more places we add extra pieces to the flow of information, the more places we have to guard against incursion.”

Studying Darach for a moment Faye nodded to herself. “Tell you what. Let’s lock down this area with a bypass and head down to my lab. Maybe seeing my actual program will help us find a tidy solution.”

Walker gave Faye a shocked look. “Now don’t you tease an old man here Lieutenant. Actually getting a chance to see your program?”
