“A couple reasons,” Faye said slowly. “I mean, you’re my best friend, and if I can’t tell you of all people, then how can I even accept that it is a part of my story? Speaking the story aloud makes it become true again. And I guess also I needed you as my captain to understand why I freaked out when you said I had to wait to take any leave away from the ship. I understood intellectually that certain things had to work themselves out but it immediately generated that feeling of being trapped. You said I could leave the ship anytime I wanted to. It might have sounded like a choice to you, but even framing it like that made it made it a choice to cause more harm to myself. And I think we can both agree that my leaving the ship without a good reason is not in my best interest. But when I asked you not to make the Manhattan a prison, it’s because I knew first hand what it was like to be in a very pretty prison. I knew what that felt like. And I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.” Kodell. The Tal Shiar. She knew prisons well.

“Fair enough. And makes sense.” and he looked at her for a moment. “And what is the other reason? Because there is something else.” and he chuckled. “Thats the drawback to having best friends… they know you, even when you don’t want them to.” and he smiled. “Unless… that is a story for another time?”

Faye gave him a lopsided grin. “Nah, I can talk about it.” Once again the dappled light from above drew her gaze. Chewing on her lower lip, Faye considered how to approach this. “Luke… I think he was a distraction from my other feelings. The ones that surfaced when that person called me. The one I had, no… do have this strange connection with when I first boarded the ship.” She looked back at Alex, and this time her easy expression was replaced by confusion. “He’s Orion, Alex. And it means nothing and everything all at the same time.” There was only one Orion who had ever been on the roster.

Alex scowled as his mind went to the roster. It took him a second and then he said “Ah. That would be… Lieutenant Hammor, right? Ops officer?” He asked to make sure he had the right person.
“Ok… so let me ask you a question… or rather, a series of questions. So this fellow Hammor… tell me about him. What is he like? And more importantly… what makes him special? Not just another Luke?”

Her face softened as her eyes lit up and her mouth struggled to contain her smile. She went to speak, but there weren’t the words… at first. “He’s sweet. And funny. He makes me laugh and feel at ease.” She exhaled. “He listens and… he’s had similar experiences like the one I had with Kodell. Except none of his was… pleasant. So he understands that part of me even if I never told him any details. Not that I know all of his either- we haven’t quite had that full conversation. But he surprises me in lovely ways, Alex. I told him about the garden and he was so excited on my behalf that he designed and fabricated an entire mushroom house and had it sent over. For me. He’s on a ship in a different quadrant and… and.. he’d do that, for me?” Even now she was in utter awe. It seemed surreal, like it was all meant for someone else and there had just been a terrible mixup.
