“Lieutenant,” Karla greeted Calloway with a nod, “I’m Doctor Karla Reyes, assigned to Manhattan, and this is Doctor Durik, assigned to the Event Horizon.”
Faye cast her stormy grey-green eyes sideways. “Faye Calloway, Mission Specialist. I’m just joining the Manhattan,” she greeted simply, giving both of them a nod.
“Ma’am,” Durit said to Calloway, “I am sorry for the hurt that members of my species may have done you in the past. I am a neurosurgeon and a Doctor and I have dedicated my life to healing the minds of the sick and injured, whether they are Cardassian or alien. I do not wish to cause you distress, and am more than happy to depart if it would ease your discomfort.”
She shook her head. “No. You don’t have to leave on my account- it’s not your problem.” Faye had had enough time and distance from those events to look at them with some perspective. After all, it wasn’t like this was a combat situation where it could even remotely be an issue and even then, circumstances being what they were, it really did seem like a lifetime ago. She looked back out the windows at the vessel that could change a great deal for her.
“As you wish, Lieutenant,” Durit replied, “for what it is worth, I am sorry for the pain and hurt.”
Faye was still gazing out the window as Durik spoke to her and for a moment there was no indication that she had heard him, but then Faye gave a small nod of her head. In hr mind she could recall like yesterday the screams of her fellow colonist as the Jem Hadar were unleashed on Tracken II and the Cardassians happily lent a hand. It felt like a lifetime ago and in many ways it was. Years had passed and there were few alive who had experienced those troubled time from her vantage point. For the most part, those that were had ended up in prison, though she had heard through some circles about some having been released. Still, there were moments like this where the rebel in her wanted to leap out and make people pay for what had happened to everyone she had known and cared about. But luckily for her and everyone else, those moments were fleeting and she had a much better grip on her whims.
Reyes admired that most about Durit, his awareness of the impact his presence had on others. Being a Cardassian was something he couldn’t help, but he never hid from the pain that his people caused to others, and never made excuses for it, it was what it was. He let his actions and skill as a doctor to speak on his behalf.
“It’s a beautiful ship, isn’t it, Lieutenant,” Karla said just before the silence between them got unbearable.

“I too am looking forward to it,” Karla replied, “my posting to the Manhattan came to me shortly after I completed a stint on a combat vessel. Hopefully this’ll see me less involved in mending people after the they’ve been shot at and more involved in ensuring crew are free of disease and injury.”
“If you ladies will excuse me,” Durit said, “I’ve got a shift starting shortly in the station’s infirmary, “see you tonight at Fat Sam’s, Karla?”
“Of course,” Karla said, giving him a quick peck on the cheek, “see you then.”
“You’ll be coming to Fat Sam’s, Faye,” Karla asked, “it’ll be a chance for us all to let our hair down, they are calling it the grand opening or official opening or some such thing. The owner of the lounge/bar/grill calls himself Fat Sam, and he prides himself on knowing everyone by name when they first walk through the door into the lounge.”
-Karla, Doctor
“Fat Sam’s?” Faye said with raised eyebrows. “I, uh, don’t really do the social thing very well. It sounds… interesting, but I’m not sure it would be a very good idea.” There, an honest and yet mellow response. Keep it up Calloway and you might even be mistaken for being well-adjusted.
