It was late, but that never stopped him. Federation Security Agent Micah Pikelsimer looked at himself in the mirror and smiled. He was dressed as he had been on his arrival: casual clothes with a nice leather jacket. But after the planning session and discussion with the Command staff, he had come back and eaten dinner by himself. He cleaned up, and then put on a cologne his sister had sent him from home. It smelled of the woods, with just a hint of leather and bourbon. He went to the table where his bag was kept and reached inside and pulled out two jars with screw on lids. Inside sloshed a clear liquid. Holding the glass jars in his non-metal hand, he made sure he was presentable and then left his room.A few minutes later, he arrived at the door he sought. Rather than pressing the chime, he used the metal hand on his left side to knock, the metal-on-metal ringing softly through the quiet passageway. He then leaned on the side of the door frame and waited.

In her guest quarters, Shara had begun to unwind. The pins holding her long wavy brown hair had come out, and she had changed into what had become her ‘off-duty uniform’: black slacks and a grey top. This time it was sleeveless, much like the standard issue undershirts she had worn much of her ‘above board’ career.
Investigating the tapping, her well-trained instincts made her cautious as she approached the door. Her first thought was that it might be Faye, but she discarded that immediately. Faye wasn’t the type to knock quietly.
The slid open and if Shara was surprised to see Pikelsimer there, it wasn’t evident. Her pale blue eyes took him in and she certainly didn’t miss the jars in his hand. “Sorry, I’m not sure I’m interested in what you’re selling,” she said lightly.

Micah grinned and said “Who says I’m selling anything? I just asked tha computer to direct to me to the best damn view on the ship and it sent me here.” And he gave her a long look and another smile. “Can’t say it was wrong in the slightest, though.” and he winked.
Amusement tugged at her mouth. He was smooth, that was for certain. But that sort of talk could get old pretty fast. She’s seen and done too much to be easily swayed by it… for the most part.
“So, you gonna invite me in, or do I haveta stand out here and drink this all by my lonesome?” and he held up the two jars.
Pikelsimer
“Accepting a drink from a strange man, that certainly sounds risky. Not the riskiest thing I’ve ever done, nor the stupidest.” Shara gave a small gesture with her head and moved off towards the sofa, her footsteps expectedly soft and quiet.
Settling herself on the sofa, she crossed her legs and draped her arms over the back and sides, unafraid of taking the space she wanted and needed. The space around her was much as it had been the day she had arrived, with a few notable exceptions: she had made more functional workstation at the desk meant to be able to the do the proper work she expected might always be required of her, even though she was technically on ‘leave’. As Cochrane had pointed out, this mess hadn’t been concluded yet.
On the desk next to the dual computer setup was the only personal effect: a photo of her, Edward and Faye (about ten at the time) outside their home on Tracken II. Other than that, there was no evidence she had been living here the last couple weeks. It was immaculate and perhaps not so unexpectedly, she could up and leave in a moment’s notice if it was required.

Micah followed her in and set the jars on the desk, taking in the photo as he slid off his jacket and tossing it over a chair. Underneath he wore a v-neck dark green shirt. Notably, the left sleeve had been removed and hemmed. Sticking out of it was a cybernetic arm, artificial up to and including the shoulder. It had no synth-skin covering and no attempt had been made to hide it. In fact, on the shoulder had been etched the emblem of the Star Fleet Marines. It was an older model, but keen eyes would pick out that it was very well maintained and had been heavily modified… how was unknown.
Every detail mattered in their line of work and she watched his movements. You could tell a lot about a person by the way they moved and how they held themselves. Her eyes skimmed over the artificial limb with curiosity but it was more confirmation of something she already knew.
Micah carried the two jars to the couch and sat down near Shara, but not in her space. He opened the jars deftly and handed one to her. Raising his to her, he said “Here’s to ya, Commander. And careful… it bites back.” and he took a drink. “So… how you holding up? Gotta be rough with your kid in the spot she is.”
Pikelsimer
Dropping the arm on the back of the sofa, she took the jar in hand and turned slightly to face him more. Shara took a whiff before she took a generous swallow. The drink definitely had bit, but so did she. It went down easily with nary a twitch on her part and she was tempted to ask him where the still was. The drink gave her time to digest his unexpected question. He might not have caught her unaware with the drink, but his question struck a nerve.
For a moment there was silence before she found the right words, but even then she knew they didn’t full encompass it all. “It’s rough,” she said quietly. Shara inhaled and in her exhale, she shoulders relaxed downwards. “There’s…” She shook her head. “As a parent all you want to do is protect your child. Keep them safe. All you want is for them to be happy. And so much of it is out of my hands. I can’t do anything, so I’ve had to wait and be patient. Never used to be my strong suit,” she said with a snort, before taking another drink.
