Recent events had been going well, Luke was finding more people to connect with having followed Cochranes advice on going out their to get to know the crew. To thank him and to further his network or atleast try and find some common ground with the person whom seemingly was trying to help him be a better person. he’d sent an invitation to Cochrane that morning that if he so wanted to join him to wear something warm.

The holodeck program that Luke had activated was Östjutenlake, in south-east Sweden a frozen lake surrounded by rolling snow blanketed hills. He had wrapped up in a navy blue thick goose down jacket, grey jogging trousers and fluffy socks which he had tucked his trouser into to avoid any snow getting onto his and had a pair of gloves and wolly hat on. Around his neck were his hockey skates. He was sipping on a mulled wine waiting to see if the Captain would come, if not Luke would simply enjoy the time off alone.

The doors to the Holodeck slid open and Cochrane walked in. He was wearing a pair of brown canvas pants with large pockets on the sides and a dark red coat of some kind of leather, but that had odd swirls and scarring. It was obviously not Earth based, whatever it was, but it was heavy and obviously insulated; and had matching gloves with (oddly) metal-reinforced knuckles. A hat of the same material as the pants sat on his head. Whatever shoes he was wearing were covered by the snow as he trudged up to the Security Chief.

“Interesting place, Mr. Wyatt. Familiar to you? Or is it a holodeck favorite?” he asked and held his hand out to the man.

Luke took out his right hand from his glove and shook Cochranes hand before returning it to its warm incubator of a glove. “A bit of both, I’ve been here before once with my father and now I only ever get to visit it in the holodeck its nothing like the original as is anything but it gives me a place to unwind and be me. I thought that by inviting you here and well taking your advice you’d see I’m not just the person you have seen me be.” He explained before quickly asking, “Can you skate?” he pointed to his own laced around his neck.

Cochrane smiled slightly and said “I look forward to seeing what I’ve missed then, Mr. Wyatt. And as far as skating goes, I may done it a time or two.” and he pointed at Luke’s hockey skates. “Hand on a second.” and he went back a few paces and activated the door and wall, going to the replicator next to it. His back to Luke, he said something too low for Luke to hear, and then turned around holding a black skate bag. He hid the door and turned around.

Trudging back to Wyatt, he said “Led on, Mr. Wyatt. The ice awaits.”

Cochrane

Given Cochrane a nod he turned around and began making the walk to the ice lakes, the holo-programme had been designed so you had a few minutes walk from the door to the cabins where you could change. The Cabins then had a pair which led out onto the ice, it meant that in the summer people could fish and swim to their hearts content and in the winter well, some liked a freezing cold bath in the morning other like Luke just liked to skate.

As they walked Luke was mostly quiet, the sound of crunching ice underfoot the only noise the pair made until finally, he spoke. “Your advice is working, I think I’m really starting to make a positive difference in my department and the crew, at least when it comes to being approachable that is” He explained looking over his shoulder their footprints leaving a trail behind them.

Cochrane nodded slightly. “So I have heard. That’s a good step. How do you feel about it?” Cochrane asked as they got closer to the ice.

Cochrane

It was expected that he’d be keeping an eye on him and it was no hidden fact that Luke was trying to right his wrongs. “Good, great actually things really are looking up even in unexpected places.” They reached the end of the ice next to the hut, he didn’t need to go inside but turned to Cochrane, “You can put your skates on here or inside. I find though the warmth of the hut makes acclimatising to the cold longer.” He dropped the skates on the floor and began untying his laces.

When he was done Luke was standing a bit taller and a little more awkwardly but in terms of how someone walked in skates he could do it naturally and with great ease. he shuffled to the edge of the ice until finally, he could feel the slick smoothness he kicked off and slowly made his way about a meter from the lake perimeter. “I should have brought some sticks,” he said waiting for Cochrane to join him.

Cochrane simply smiled and said “Maybe so…” and he sat down and took off his shoes… which were actually black hide of some kind with wicked looking spikes on the soles. Setting them carefully aside, he said “Great for snow and ice.” and he patted them and then opened the skate bag, withdrawing skates that were not like Luke’s at all.

Whereas Lukes skates had rounded ends and the boot was high with a flat sole, Cochrane’s were much more… delicate. The blade was thinner, and the high boot had a pronounced heel. Additionally, the tip of the blade on Cochrane’s skate ended in a small protrusion in which were cut small teeth…

Figure skates.

Cochrane put them on with a sense of familiarity, and then likewise walked a tad stiffly to the ice. Once he set foot on the ice, he pushed off and made his way easily to Wyatt.
