Shara watched her daughter with a wide grin. It something else to see Faye so lively and animated. Had she ever seen that before? She didn’t think so. “Dear me, I feel like I should have brought a guitar with me and we could have had a whole campfire like the old days,” she said with a light laugh.

Faye tossed her mother a critical look. It wasn’t a glare, or quite a look of surprise, but once again Shara seemed to be revealing small things so easily that she was left wondering about this woman. There was so much yet to talk about and they would get there, but in the meantime, it certainly provoked Faye’s thoughts and emotions. “Maybe we should do that sometime,” she said softly.

“It really was very moving. You definitely have a way with expressing the spoken word, that really helps give life to the poem,” Walker said as he paused to think back on her performance, and the words she had spoken.

Though she flushed and demurred a little, Faye acknowledged the compliment with a small nod. Yeah, that part wasn’t getting easier so far.

Pretha had been watching the whole show and smiled as the announcement was made. She was glad she had been right. There had been a reason for Faye’s actions, and the woman was worthy of the belief Pretha had known she deserved deep down. As the last of the most recent poem was murmured, she stepped up just to the right of the woman. “It was lovely. The poem I mean. And you deserve every moment of this evening. Enjoy it. I will find you tomorrow, I’m sure.” She winked and nodded to the woman hoping she understood the friendship that was being offered, or rather, had been offered back in the brig. It was still there and never wavered. She then nodded to the others.

Faye smiled at Pretha, glad for the woman’s new friendship. It had been a thread of mercy in an otherwise untenable situation. “I’ll be around,” she said warmly.

“Commander,” she nodded to Faye’s mother. “Lieutenant,” she smiled to Faye and then the rest. “A good evening to you all.” She patted Faye’s shoulder once more and turned to go.

Faye couldn’t help but grin as Oberon left. And certainly she was still existing in that state of elation.

Rayye saw the cluster around Faye and decided she would seek out the woman in the morning. Half the ship was celebrating that things weren’t bleak any longer. And the other half was celebrating that Faye truly wasn’t a monster. Regardless, she had known something was fishy and was glad the woman wasn’t a turncoat truly bent on killing the Command Staff.

She caught Faye’s eye at one point and lifted her glass in salutation and then turned and headed for her room. She wasn’t well known to the woman, nor vice versa. So it didn’t seem right to butt into what seemed like a private cluster around her. She took her drink and went in search of a more solitary place, guessing she would probably end up in her quarters.

Faye bowed her head in acknowledgment as yet another person she hadn’t known seemed to see her. Yes, of course having been brought into the spotlight would do that, but it felt different than other times before. She had been publicly promoted before, on the Samurai, and there has been applause like there was for everyone, but here and now it was different. It was like they saw her and Faye suspected she’d no longer be able to blend into the background on this ship. And maybe, just maybe, that was a good thing.

“So I have to ask, now that everything has been, well I wouldn’t say explained, but cleared up is a good phrase, how does it feel to be the center of attention? I’m sure it’s not something you are used to that much in your line of work.”

As they had been standing there, he had noticed the various people looking over, and in general celebrating around them. Even before she had started reciting the poetry, it was obvious that Faye was the center of everyones attention that night.

“Distinctly uncomfortable,” Faye said with a laugh. “I mean, I don’t have to go out of my way to not get along with people and in general I’ve been happier to keep to myself, my line of work as you call it has been relatively new. I was just a science lab rat who kept to myself. A lot has changed, and while I’ll be happy to feel more at ease on the ship, I won’t lie and say I wouldn’t be glad to find some quiet once again in my lab with the computers.”

Shara gazed at her daughter with a small but warm smile. Taking a step closer, she pulled her into a half hug and quickly let her go, sensing perhaps that Faye was reaching her limits on contact today. “I’m going to go. But enjoy tonight and do yourself a favour: when you finally float back down off of that cloud you’re on, try to get some sleep?”

Faye smirked and nodded. “I suppose I could try.”

With a final wink, Commander Calloway spun slowly on the ball of her foot and set off towards the path that would lead her to the main entrance.

Returning her attention to Walker, it was suddenly a much smaller group just the two of them, despite the people milling about who cast her glances now and again. “I have some things to deal with first, but in a few days we should chat,” Faye said, knowing she was being cryptic. But then again, Walker knew more about her role on this ship than most of the crew and maybe that was why he had even opted to help her in the first place. Either way, they needed a chance to talk in private.

“Anytime, my door is always open for you,” Walker said pausing to take a drink. “I know things have changed quite a bit, but I wouldn’t say it was for the worse. I’ve seen a lot of people go through a lot less, and not make it through nearly half as well as you did. So for what it’s worth, you did a great job.”

He quickly took another drink. He had seen his fair share of struggles while in the fleet, and helped coach a number of young crewmen along the way. Hopefully he would get a chance to see Faye continue to succeed.

Finishing off his glass, he lowered it, with the ice clinking against the side. “I think I need a refill, and I do believe you have a party to enjoy. So enjoy it! You earned this.”

Smiling at Faye, Walker headed back towards the bar to get a refill.
