Alex looked at her and asked her pointedly “But are you? And more importantly… is he?” He looked at her and shook his head and laughed softly again before downing the contents of the glass again and refilling.

Faye watched him for a moment and then got up, taking her empty wine glass with her to the kitchen. “We’ve discussed the expectations and limitations very clearly, yes.”

He leaned back and looked at her, his eyes points of fire. “First mentoring lesson… it is times like this that being the Captain is really f&^%ing hard and makes you wish you had pursued a career in something less stressful… like the bomb squad.”

Rinsing off the odd little stone, Faye returned and dropped it in the empty glass. Then she proceeded to pour herself a drink and knock it back, with all the smoothness of the disaster of a night almost two weeks ago and none of the crisis. “Tell me how you really feel,” she said sarcastically with raised brows. “I am a grown woman you know, last I checked.”

Alex looked at his glass, not at her. “How I really feel as your Captain? How I really feel as your friend?” and his eyes came up and met hers.

“Both? And think about that a minute. Because I will be honest with you.” and he took a drink.

Faye poured herself another drink. “Well, as my captain, you really don’t have a say. As my friend, I value your opinion though that doesn’t mean I have to like it or agree,” she said evenly before taking a modest sip of the smooth liquor.

“I don’t have a say no matter what. But I have an opinion based on each. You want my opinion as your friend? Ok…” and another long pull from the glass followed. “As your friend. You can and should do better… for your sake.”

It was to her credit, and tho their friendship, that Faye allowed her mind to attempt processing his words before she reacted. But nope, the frown wasn’t going to disappear from her face anytime soon it appeared. “I… don’t understand. I don’t know what that means.” At least she was meeting his honesty with her own.
