Several moments passed before Faye found the words. Whether they were the ones she had been looking for remained to be seen, but she at least ventured forth into this nebulous and confusing topic. “So… this thing you’re talking about, where someone can make you feel so intensely, including anger? That’s… definitely been happening.”

Faye shifted her gaze back to Alex. “The night I was… drinking, I wasn’t alone for the latter part of it, and I… wanted things to happen, and they, wisely, bowed out. Which was good. I was upset, but it was… better. And I kept thinking later after I was sober and we saw each other again that it would have disappeared, that it was just the alcohol playing off some distinct tension between us.” She shook her head, finishing with her chin pressed into her shoulder, slight awkwardness creeping in. Was this the sort of conversation they were supposed to have? Did they have this kind of friendship? Ahh well, unto the breach and all that. “And boy was I wrong! Long story short, we… got together.” To this she grinned, and though she did lift her gaze back to Alex, she didn’t quite look him in the eye. “Him being… well… Wyatt.”

Alex was stunned… and slightly more than he had been with the phaser in his office. He stared at Faye for a long time, his mind going a mile a minute and his face going through multiple expressions: confusion, disbelief, anger, and then finally… disappointment.

“Lieutenant… Wyatt… well, then. If you’ll excuse me a moment, Faye… I believe this calls for something exponentially stronger than wine.” and he got up and went to the kitchen and opened a cabinet, retrieved two glasses and a bottle with no label and a dark amber-brown liquid inside. He returned and sat down, put one glass in front of him and one close to Faye, and then filled his. Setting the bottle on the table, he locked his eyes on Faye

She hadn’t expected him to be elated for her or anything. Even Faye knew it was way out of the realm of anyone’s expectations. And given that he had known the most about her work, her antagonism with him over said work and of course the crap show that had been her plan to clear her name, well, Faye didn’t blame him for his disbelief. The sudden urge of his to drink was not exactly a wining reaction though. Her eyes flicked to the bottle and back to Alex.

“Wyatt…” and he shook his head and laughed softly, a somewhat derisive one, and simply threw back his head and drained the glass in one go; then set the glass down heavily and refilled it.

“Wasn’t exactly planned, trust me,” Faye dryly. “Even I know how crazy it sounds. But before you get all… more weird on me. It’s not serious. I was serious when I said I wasn’t in the right place for a relationship. That hasn’t changed. I’m treading carefully.”

Alex looked at her and asked her pointedly “But are you? And more importantly… is he?” He looked at her and shook his head and laughed softly again before downing the contents of the glass again and refilling.

Faye watched him for a moment and then got up, taking her empty wine glass with her to the kitchen. “We’ve discussed the expectations and limitations very clearly, yes.”

He leaned back and looked at her, his eyes points of fire. “First mentoring lesson… it is times like this that being the Captain is really f&^%ing hard and makes you wish you had pursued a career in something less stressful… like the bomb squad.”

Rinsing off the odd little stone, Faye returned and dropped it in the empty glass. Then she proceeded to pour herself a drink and knock it back, with all the smoothness of the disaster of a night almost two weeks ago and none of the crisis. “Tell me how you really feel,” she said sarcastically with raised brows. “I am a grown woman you know, last I checked.”
