Alex smiled and said “I learned a long time ago that rank has zero effect on protecting one from the anger of an intelligent and really pissed off woman.” There was mirth and humor in the statement, but also something else that was hard to place.

Faye eyed him intently and cocked an eyebrow. “Huh. How come that doesn’t work with me? Or is it that you haven’t seen me truly angry yet?” Of course she was teasing, but there was also something curious in her tone.

Alex literally snorted. “I find that hysterical coming from the woman that shot me.” and he smiled broadly and gave her a wink. “And while I have seen you mad, yes… I am sure that there are depths of anger you can delve into that are probably reserved only for family, those by blood or choice, and romantic partners.” And he laughed and then sighed and looked at her and took her hand and gave it a squeeze.
Amused was one word her what she felt, but as usual, there was genuine affection. “Yeah, I’m starting to think it was a good thing we never met earlier in my career,” she deadpanned.
“And honestly, Faye… that is how it should be. Only those who are that close to us can bring forth that kind of strong emotion. At least… thats how most individuals I know are… myself included. The more someone means to you, the more mad you get when they piss you off.”

This time, confusion etched it’s way across her face. Or was it? Maybe it was closer to bewilderment. But as it often did, Faye’s expression told the story of the swirl of thought in her head. Afterall, no one could say she had much of a poker face. Had she actually ever consider career with Intelligence formerly, she’d have made an absolute terrible undercover agent. The only reason it had worked the one time was that she got to go (at first in disguise) but as her unruly self. “Is that how it works?” she said, her voice instantly quieter.
Sitting back, she was actually flabbergasted. All she could think was how Luke managed to provoke her anger in one moment and then sincere desire in the next. It was often maddening. Her gaze shifted away from Alex, unfocused, as she processed the implications. “Well… crap…” she mutered.
