It did not take long for them to set up the first three enhancers.

The indicators were clear that there was a ship down there, and not one that had landed well. There was a large dark region of metal indicating the superstructure, though out from that were numerous smaller pieces. There were indications of other things .. hints .. but three enhancers showed up the skeleton of a ship that was principally several meters down to some of the stray bits while the main structure began at least ten meters down.

Well, given she had just secured the link to the Manhattan there really wasn’t anything else to do unless they needed to recalibrate the enhancers. Faye cast a slightly bewildered look at Kiama. True she hadn’t been on many away missions (her previous issues with authority made her an unlikely choice), but she had always thought there would be more… something. Communication? Back and forth? This whole experience had been rather odd and she just didn’t have enough context to know if it was typical or not.

Giving Faye an equally bewildered look while raising her shoulders, Kiama tried to think of something they could, should do. This is awkward, she mouthed silently. Since this was literally her second away mission since her graduation from the Academy, the first being yesterday, she felt highly confused. Sure she understood that there wasn’t always time for much conversation and from what little they knew the situation on the Manhattan was tense at best. But how could they help without further information? And while her rank and position indicated otherwise, she was still very new to all of this since her graduation hadn’t been that long ago.

Closing the small distance between her and Faye, Kiama leaned towards her and whispered softly so that her voice wouldn’t be picked up over the open com channel and potential distract the bridge crew, “Whatever is down there is massiv and it seems to have something to do with what is going on with the ship right now. Having a closer look would be good, but I fear that it’s too deep underground. I’m more than open for any suggestion how to proceed from here.”

“We need to get a better idea of the surface to know what is and isn’t possible,” Faye said quietly back. “Our tricorders aren’t cutting through the interference perfectly, but they are better than the ship’s sensors right now. Let’s try tying the enhancers into the tricorder as well,” she said, flipping out her tricorder again.

It didn’t take long to use the enhancers to cast a wider and clearer sensor signal over the area and Faye moved about (not too far though) to get a broader sense of the surface. Calloway wished they could have had time to get the entire grid setup with enhancers but this would have to do.

Topography showed a broken region of stone and earth that had been disturbed over the last millennia. Beyond the ‘disturbed’ region it was rolling karst topography of limestone layered and occasionally reaching the surface. Faye would detect a portion of that limestone outcropping on a nearby hill that formed a weathered cliff face. What was more, from what the tricorder could see was that there was a cave system that may or may not be natural that led from there into the direction of the broken ground.

“Whoa…” Faye said, her eyes lighting up, showing Kiama what the scan was showing. “Let’s go see what we can find. Even a little deeper might get us better scans.”

With slightly narrowed eyes, Kiama studied the readings for moment; nodding thoughtfully a few times. Smiling at Faye, her eyes sparkled with new enthusiasm. “That looks very promising. Hopefully it is what it seems to be,” she replied.

=/\=Away team to Manhattan. We’re detecting an underground cavern system very close to where we are, around the outcropping. We can’t get to the larger of the metal pieces without bringing down heavy equipment and digging, so this is the safest way to get some answers,=/\= Faye said, unable to hide a thread of excitement in her voice.

The response was instantaneous and definitive. =/\= Cochrane to Away Team. Understood, Lieutenant. But do not go in there until we clear you and get you some extra eyes. You understand, Lieutenant Calloway? =/\=

Leaving it to Faye to reply to the call, Kiama stood silently next to her, running through ideas, hypothesises and possibilities in her mind.

=/\=Acknowledged, Captain,=/\= Calloway replied. She did glance at Kiama and give a faux pout, but really she wasn’t going to be risky here. It was prudent to have additional information before they leapt into the mystery.

Gesturing with her head, she leaned in towards Naim. “We can’t go in but we still have to get there,” she said with a grin as she moved off in the direction of the hills. “Let’s go.”
