He looked at the two options and weighed them up, “I’d usually pick the one out the way but I’m trying really hard to integrate into the crew so let’s go for the one smack bang in the middle, who knows maybe I’ll make some new friends.” Luke smiled, “And its closer to yours so I get to keep an eye on the enemy so to speak.” His tone was teasing, he didn’t think he’d even be capable of thinking of her as an enemy again.

Faye eyed him up and down and, setting her foot back on the path, leaned in towards him. “Last I checked enemies don’t get to do to each other what we did, and that would have been a shame,” she said in a low voice before stepping away.

“No I didn’t mean, I meant in the competition” he said hoping he didn’t upset her, he’d have to choose his words more carefully.

She cast him an amused look over her shoulder. “We’re Lieutenants. Pretty sure we’re not invited.”

Faye wandered back over to her plot and kept going to the wall beside the greenhouse and the beds. A small panel had been installed and she set about pulling up the bed assignments and attaching his name to it. “All done, it’s yours. You just have to decide what sort of bed you want to have and what might be growing in it.” She loved this part, the part of endless possibilities. In her mind she could envision any number of small gardens the complicated man might nurture.

“Vegetables for sure, Something practical and a tasty reward.” He didn’t want to admit how much time he had been thinking about growing his own things since thier conversation. Fruit was a close second but vegetables offered much more in the culinary sense. “What vegetables or how is a question ill have to ask you, what’s your favourite?” He wanted to get to know her more, and of he increased in skill bas to gardening at the same time he wasn’t going to complain m

Faye shrugged. “I wouldn’t say I had a favourite vegetable. More like, along with flowers, I’m going to grow stuff that goes into making the food I love. And strawberries. There is nothing more satisfying than a perfectly ripe strawberry,” she said, with a gleam in her eyes.

Luke committed the fact that she liked Strawberries to memory, maybe sometime in the future he’d be able to do something with that little bit of information. every little helped he though as he considered what he wanted to grow, he had a few ideas from doing the small amount of research he ha done.

“But this is a closed ecosystem in an artificial environment. Unfortunately we can’t also include the insect populations that make so much of ecology possible. So we can simulate the most vital part and the rest, like pollination, we have to get around. For new gardeners, like yourself, we’re recommending you grow parthenocarpic varieties of anything. That simply means they have been developed to be self-pollinating. Otherwise, if you want to grow great-grandma’s favourite tomato or something, you’re going to have to hand-pollinate in order to get any fruit and most people aren’t going to have the time and energy for that.”

If he showed he didn’t understand a word of what she was saying Faye didn’t let him know, he should have taken notes.

She considered him. “So… what do you want to eat? Or if you’re really not sure I can make suggestions for things that a new gardener will have more luck with.”

“Well, I like food that packs a lot of punch so maybe some chilli peppers? I could make some chilli jams or what about some Onions, Tomatoes? And get on the Chutney Train?” His excitement about learning a new skill and growing some vegetables now showing. “But if you have any suggestions I’m open to them, I dont even know what tools I’ll need.”
