Another day off meant filling time, but the one thing she had been looking forward to was working on her garden bed. Checking the sign-up list, the raised beds were being claimed at a decent pace. Not everyone was going to be interested but people seemed more eager than she had expected. And there were quite a few first time gardeners from the brief chats she had had with people. It reminded her that she and the botanical staff should go forth with some of the gardening classes they had been discussing.Which brought to mind Luke’s idle comment about maybe starting his own bed, or at least helping and learning with someone else’s. In her mind there was no better way to learn than to try it yourself and make mistakes and learn what to do better next time. So she sent a text message:
To: Lieutenant Wyatt, Luke
From: Lieutenant Calloway, Faye
Subject: Garden BedsHey Luke. The raised beds on the left side of the garden nearest the greenhouse and storage are going pretty fast. If you are still interested in one of those I can hold one for you, but I would recommend coming down and picking which one you would like yourself. I’ll be working in the garden all day. Drop by anytime.

Sending that off, she set about dressing with the intention of likely getting dirty: grey cargo pants, black tank top and hiking boots. She pulled her brown hair into a ponytail and on the last twist of the elastic only half pulled her hair through so it hung in a loop, tidying out of the way of dragging in the soil. On a whim thought, she put on her IDIC necklace, the silver chain the only thing visible as the pendant hung beneath her shirt.
Luke had just finished a busy day at work, he’d reformed the security department and himself to better reflect the conversation he had with Cochrane. When he sat down and saw he had a messaged he opened it instantly out of curiosity more than anything and smiled when he saw it was delivered by Faye. Reading it he quickly went about to change to take her up on her offer.
A large seedling tray was balanced on each arm as Faye stepped out of the turbolift and moved along Deck Four. Stepping through the large double doors, she was instantly hit by the smell of green and earth and all things growing. It made her smile.
One of the perks of having designed the space and taken the lead on the whole thing was that she had snagged her bed first. It was one of the ones closest to the greenhouse and storage area and that mean less distance to haul equipment and soil. She might not be adverse to hard work but she preferred efficiency where possible. Setting the trays at her bed, she moved over to the equipment room and grabbed w wheelbarrow and a big shovel. Then she wheeled it over to the large compost pile and began to shovel it into the wheelbarrow. As she worked, she hummed an old tune, a Bajoran folk song she only knew the melody to and could never bring herself to research the words.

Having changed into something that would better suit gardening in the form of some dark blue jogging bottoms, grey top and trainers Luke entered the Arberteum. He remembered the last time.e he was here and what it led to, it was a few days since then and Luke had been trying to put it to the side, but on his way to meet Faye it was hard to avoid he fact of what happened.
He followed the path until finally the garden beds came Into view and so did Faye, “Hey you, I didn’t want to miss out on a plot so decided to come right away.” Luke thought how good she looked though his mind wanted to wander to other places.

Faye tipped the shovelful of compost onto the bed and then planted the shovel into the dirt firmly as she lifted her gaze. “Good plan. I heard about a growing contest between a bunch of ensigns and I think tomorrow there will be a run on beds,” she said with a small grin.
“Sounds like I have some catching up to todo, where do I start?” Looking over the beds he noticed that alot of them were now filled or atleast planted compared to the night of the ceremony, Fayes suggestion to pick one or not get one wasn’t a lie
Faye gestured to the groupings of beds. “Come on, I’ll show you what’s left on this side.” They were standing next to the greenhouse in the first pair giant beds that were divided into four. Faye stepped around the flat of seedlings on the path and moved down to the third pair, lifting her foot and tapping the edge of the one by the wall with her foot. “Bed A in this one is still free, as is one in the grouping at the very end. Both have advantages and disadvantages. This one here is closer to supplies. All the beds have water hookups so you can have drip lines on a timer, but hauling equipment and other supplies can take time and energy. But it’s also in the middle of everything so more likely to be others around. If you’re wanting time alone and quiet space, the far bed might be the better choice,” she said lightly.

He looked at the two options and weighed them up, “I’d usually pick the one out the way but I’m trying really hard to integrate into the crew so let’s go for the one smack bang in the middle, who knows maybe I’ll make some new friends.” Luke smiled, “And its closer to yours so I get to keep an eye on the enemy so to speak.” His tone was teasing, he didn’t think he’d even be capable of thinking of her as an enemy again.

Faye eyed him up and down and, setting her foot back on the path, leaned in towards him. “Last I checked enemies don’t get to do to each other what we did, and that would have been a shame,” she said in a low voice before stepping away.
“No I didn’t mean, I meant in the competition” he said hoping he didn’t upset her, he’d have to choose his words more carefully.
Faye wandered back over to her plot and kept going to the wall beside the greenhouse and the beds. A small panel had been installed and she set about pulling up the bed assignments and attaching his name to it. “All done, it’s yours. You just have to decide what sort of bed you want to have and what might be growing in it.” She loved this part, the part of endless possibilities. In her mind she could envision any number of small gardens the complicated man might nurture.

“Vegetables for sure, Something practical and a tasty reward.” He didn’t want to admit how much time he had been thinking about growing his own things since thier conversation. Fruit was a close second but vegetables offered much more in the culinary sense. “What vegetables or how is a question ill have to ask you, what’s your favourite?” He wanted to get to know her more, and of he increased in skill bas to gardening at the same time he wasn’t going to complain m
