Kaia carefully rubbed a synthetic lotion on her stump, moisturizing the bare skin just below her bare elbow. Her synthetic arm was sitting on a table in front of her, the fur-wig peeled off and panels taken off to reveal the wiring inside. She grabbed a Padd and enabled the holo-projectors in the room, setting them to a pre-existing program that replicated the appearance and function of an arm as a solid light projection. It allowed her to “work with both hands” even when she wasn’t wearing her prosthetic. It wasn’t as responsive as a physical prosthetic, but it was functional enough.

Kaia grabbed onto some tools and began to work on some small improvements to her hand’s responsiveness and sensitivity.

Luke was doing the rounds, he often found taking a walk away from security was a good way to refresh his mind and body from the stresses of the day, ever since the Captain recommended he delegate more he found he had way to much time on his hands. “knock-knock” He said standing in the labs threshold, engineering was considered a high priority security risk so every patrol would eventually come by either the labs or main engineering at randomly periodic times, there was no specific time for it to be done but there was a requirement that they were done. He didn’t recognize the woman in the lab but her uniform made it clear she was Starfleet and an Engineer.

Kaia turned slightly, startled by the sudden appearance. I thought I locked the door… she thought to herself. The young Alien engineer gave the security officer a small wave. She was very short, barely 3 feet tall, so she was actually sitting on the table instead of a chair or the floor. “Uh, hi,” she looked at him, somewhat glad it was a stranger and not someone she knew on the ship who had suddenly walked in on her working on her arm. “No security risk here,” she said with a small grin, lifting her stump. “Just an engineer working on her prosthetic.”

He held up his hands “Sorry for the intrusion, just doing the rounds and clearing my head.” Luke had never seen the engineer before, he’d be sure to remember her. “I’m Lieutenant Luke Wyatt, chief of security.” He gave her a smile noting her stump and prosthetic, he wondered if it was a combat injury or accident. He had more than enough friends with prosthetics, as good as modern medical was missing limbs wasn’t one of them.

Kaia nodded, bringing up her natural hand to scratch lightly at her ear. Her long tail swooshed back and forth a little bit as she turned back to focus on her work. “Nice to meet you, Chief of Security. If you’re curious, you can come closer,” she offered, gesturing at the table she was seated on. “Despite the sharp teeth, I don’t bite,” she joked, baring her teeth. Kaia was, in appearance, much like a Caitian, so sharp teeth were part of the package.

“Nice to meet you too.” Thinking to the conversation he had with Cochrane about trying think the crew as more than just a crew he nodded, “Sure, you’ve peaked my intrest. Caitian or?” He asked having spotted the tail but she seemed to short to be Caitain. Moving towards the center of the room and to over where she was working. He was turning over a new leaf and if he could start here with… come to think about it did she me tion her name.
