He nodded, “that’s understandable sometimes its even hard for me to decide what I want.” Luke too sat back and listened to the music for a short while, his eyes closed. “I don’t mind all in, I can adapt. I’d never ask you to do so, it must be so… frustrating for you and I can understand that, feel it almost. If that’s so much as a thing. I don’t think I’m good or bad but I know I can be… there… For you. Maybe that’s all that matters, we don’t have to be anything or we can be everything” He didn’t open his eyes, he didn’t need to see… to see. One thing he had learned was to be able to listen to someone’s voice, thier ‘ticks’ “And I’ll never not trust you again, you’ve earned that at least and I hope you can trust me too.”

Faye let out a small sharp exhale. “Why do you think I offered a tour of the garden?” she said as the song shifted to Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb. She had called it her safe place for a reason.

“I didn’t know half the stuff I know now, I’d go back and I’d do it all different if I could” He explained looking back to hthe hands which were resting on his legs.

Measured breaths helped her brain calm the chaos it was thrust into, though the steady drum beat helped her focus them into words. “That night… I don’t blame you for anything. You made the right choice for you. I… am still debating how good or bad my decisions were. Definitely that last glass of whiskey was a bad one. I regret that not just because of the hangover.”

“The last glass was a bit much, for me too” he said trying to crack a smile, “I almost came back that night, gave in, but I knew I couldn’t not because I didn’t want to but because I knew that it was the right thing to do, that’s all I’ve ever tried to do, the right thing.” Luke took each of his hands in one another squeezing them.

Did she tell him? Had he earned that bit of her story? She wasn’t sure, but it seemed to mixed up in that ambiguity and sometimes you had to go out on that limb. “I am no longer allowing myself to drink. Synth is okay, but nothing real. I did well for awhile, but I have a history of using it to numb pain and when it goes too far bad things happen.” She sat up in her chair and looked over at him. “The last time I got that drunk, I tried to end my life and I ended up in an inpatient centre on Earth for three months. It’s how I came to be diagnosed with BPD. But… right now is very different than before. I’m very different. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t… spiral this last week.” Faye dropped her gaze, unsure if she wanted to see his expression.

“I’m glad you didn’t succeed and I’m glad you got the help you needed. God’s there been times I’ve thought about it too.” He still hadn’t opened his eyes, “After the war, after my ex wife and after just everything. How easy would it be, but then I thought wait, I endured all of that just to give up? No not me and not you either.” Luke now opened his eyes and faced her. “You maybe different but you’re not alone, not anymore and neither am I.”

“I haven’t been for awhile. I made the Manhattan my home, as someone reminded me you can’t have that without family. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that this crew is particularly persistent,” she said with a soft smile.

He gave a short snorting chuckle. “I predicted there was a 14.2857 percent change you’d try to eject me out of an air lock but now… there might be a 16.666667 chance we… well its a small chance but a chance.” Luke shrugged, “Maybe just maybe I can numb the pain, decrease your work load and just… be there for you. If there’s something I’m good at it’s being there, like some lyrics to a song you can’t get out if your head..? Until you listen to the song.”

Faye gave him a lopsided grin. “Well, I’m still not back on duty yet, so workload is fine. As for the others…” She shrugged. “We could see what happens. I make no promises I can’t keep and this is not something I can promise anything around. I’m a no-go for relationships right now. Too much to deal with, no the least of which is my long-lost mother. Anything else would be too much.”

He nodded, “I can handle that and well youre mum is kinda scary intimidating but I like her and pill give you space and time” He leaned forward, “No relationship and no promises I’m old enough to know but Faye, I owe you for the other night.” He leaned in and gave her a short peck on the cheek before leaning back and before she could object. It wasn’t a romantic kiss but an affectionate one or atleast, as little as an affectionate kiss could go without being invasive. She had set out the boundaries and from now he had to obey to them, he’d leave the decision to her. “Thankyou for opening up, it makes a difference.”
