This one wasn’t entirely quick, was he? Hmmm. “Soon, yes. If I can get a few things tweaked. I’ve made a lot of modifications on the fly, which all need to be taken into account.” In short, at this very moment she was the sole person of the entire operation who knew exactly how it worked, why and what the potential issues were. Others could try to duplicate it, but they would inevitably fail.
Faye watched him for a moment and then shook her head slightly. “You know the one thing about me that most people miss? It’s not that my brain is super intelligent and good at processing information. Or that I have a nearly eidetic memory. But that I’ve had very valid reasons to dislike people. And sure, my disorder makes social interactions complicated, but once someone gets on the same page with me, and I them, it usually gets easier. Usually,” she said with a smirk.
Studying this man before her, who looked like her one true friend, Faye’s expression saddened. “I just have one question for you, and I’d like a really honest answer. Is Commander Leroy Strickland actually still alive? I’m guessing the answer is no, because that would be a stupid risk to take and a strange liability to hold onto given these extraordinary circumstances you’ve crafted. But humour me? Tell me yes or no,” she said nonchalantly.

Blue looked at her for a long moment and then a tear welled up in one of his eyes. “Faye… I don’t even know what to say to that.” and his head cocked slightly to the side. “This was the point, then, wasn’t it? I told them you weren’t ready for another assignment…” and his voice trailed off and he turned from the forcefield and paced slowly, shaking his head. When he spoke, it was as if he was speaking to himself. “I told them you weren’t ready. I did. I said ‘You do this and you may break her, dammit.’ I told them to give you more time to recover… but they didn’t listen.” and he stopped pacing and looked at the forcefield, tears in both eyes.
“They’ve gone and broke you, haven’t they, Faye? I… I’m so sorry…” and his voice trailed off.

It was strange. The more he tried to be concerned about her, the more calm she actually became. She tilted her head and considered him. Everything was so much clearer now and she knew one thing for certain: this man was not Leroy Strickland and because she knew that much, she also knew that Leroy hadn’t betrayed her. With that one major question answered, she could handle the rest of the turmoil that surrounded her.
Faye actually smiled and then chucked. “You’re good. I’ll give you that. But the funny thing about spending a lot of time with someone is that you get to know their quirks, their dislikes, the nuances of their presence. But the problem is that you can mimic someone’s appearance with some basic cosmetic surgery. I have to admit that I am intrigued about you bypassed the medical but then again even I know that a few well placed implants can give false readings. But you know the one thing you can’t change? A person’s height. Not really. Oh, you can wear heels to make yourself taller, but you didn’t do that. Maybe your behaviour over the last few months was enough to make me question everything but it wouldn’t have gone further than that. Oh no. But having you in front of me now tells me everything I need to know. ” She moved to the forcefield again and peered at the interloper. “You’re too short. I always had to look ever so slightly up at Leroy, even when sitting, and I’m hardly short for a Human female. You’re close, but not perfect. “

Blue looked at her a long time in silence and then shook his head as he slowly looked at the floor. “Faye…” he said softly. “You really are amazing, you know that? Even now… broken… you are one of the most observant and calculating people I know.” He stepped away from the forcefield and went to the Security station, dragging the single chair from behind the desk to in front of the cell. He took a seat and lifted one leg, crossing it on his opposite knee. Reaching down, he pulled the cuff of his pants leg up to reveal…
A cybernetic leg. It was good model, well made, but definitely artificial.
“While you were away, I was in a shuttle crash. Lost both legs right above the knees when the console smashed into the chair. I was in a coma for three weeks.” and he pulled the leg of his pants back down and repeated the process with the other leg. “I guess they didn’t get the measurements as exact as they said.” and he chuckled softly, but there was a sadness in his eyes. “If you want, I can pull up my medical records and you can review them, if that will help.”
“Does that help you, Faye? Can you see that I am who I am?”
