It was only part way into the Alpha duty shift but he Captain was not on the bridge. Instead he was walking the Corridors, and getting to know the vessel he was in command of. There were many places aboard he had yet to see, and noises to hear. There was a lot to learn about the lady that protected him and his on their voyages through the Delta Quadrant. Soon they would need to return to the Event Horizon and dock for supplies and perhaps RnR if the station was complete enough, or a loan of his officers to speed the station along. That would be their lifeline in the quadrant and the Manhattan her flag ship.

Fleet Captain Balian Ibn Barazan, Captain USS Manhattan, Senior Officer Delta QuadrantSpartacus was good through the hallway. He had heard from the counselor that the captain was a fossil. He was certain that wasn’t true. But, it was well worth the chance to find out. That would be an interesting find indeed. Spartacus spotted that captain. “Good day. I heard from a source you’re a fossil. I figured that I dig up the truth about that.”
Neidell Sci
Balian paused, and looked the Science officer up and down. Kid had some Hutzpah for an Ensign. That was a rather loaded thing to take seriously, and then to fire off at the Man in control of you entire life. There was a short list of suspects that could have told him such, and Balian assumed they all wore blue. The Captain was not the best acquainted with the Scientist aboard his ship, but that was the balance of being a tactical Captain in charge of a Science ship. This was not his area of expertise. “And you Ensign are the expert that will discover the veracity of my fossilization?”
Fleet Captain Balian ibn Barazan, the Fossil
“Well I’ll do my best. I assume that since you’re moving and talking that you’re not a fossil. But, that’s my archeological opinion.” Spartacus responded.
Neidell-Sci
Balian shrugged, and nodded, “Very well Ensign, how do you intend to proceed. And of which definition of fossil are you predicating your theory upon, the Persevered in Petrified form, or an antiquated or stubbornly unchanging person?” Balian asked with a grin. This ought to at least be interesting over all, if not pleasant, but who knew at this point.
Fleet Captain Balian ibn Barazan, Captain
Not too far off, someone was walking so silently they could barely be heard, except for the light jangle of jewelry. Kaia, in off-duty clothing, entered the corridor where the Captain and science officer were walking. Her starfleet uniform exchanged for umbrella pants and a loose-fitting sleeveless top, with bangles on her wrists and a previously unseen patch of dyed fur on her shoulder, painted in some strange tribal patterns. The people of Galdor, with most of them having fur, had discovered ways of altering the pigment output of hair follicles to allow for custom markings such as what was now seen on she short fur of the engineer.
Noticing the Captain and science officer, Kaia bowed slightly. “Captain,” she said respectfully, smiling.
Kaia
The science officer had suddenly wandered off(BJ has declared a lengthy LOA), the Captain found himself looking at the diminutive engineer. Balian nodded back to her bow. Having practiced he said “Hello, Ensign Kaia” in Galdori it was the extent of his knowledge of the language but he was learning. Switching back to the common tongue and his kore at ease speaking, “I am no king, you need not bow”
Fleet Captain Balian Ibn Barazan
Kaia giggled slightly at the Captain’s attempt at speaking Galdori. “Close, but your accent is horrible, Captain,” she spoke. Her words were all in Galdori, but the combination of her URI and the ship’s automatic translation circuits made it so that the captain heard common. If she spoke in common, her accent would be not nearly as bad as that of the captain’s in Galdori, but still strong.
“It is customary among the Raka to bow to those higher in authority than oneself, especially on days like today,” Kaia said with a bright smile. She seemed particularly happy.
Kaia
The Captain nodded, “You think that accent is bad, you should hear my Ferengi,” the Captain flashed a smile, “And what ensign is it that makes today a day worth bowing for?” That Captain asked slowing his stride to keep pace with the smaller being or stopping if she was not continuing on with him.
Fleet Captain Balian Ibn Barazan
“It’s The Night of Full Moons!” she exclaimed. Realizing that the Captain probably didn’t know what she meant, she explained. “Seven times in six years, the moons are both full. That’s the night of full moons. We celebrate the births that have happened in the past fourteen months, and commemorate those we have lost. Then the cycle begins anew. The years on Galdor are split into sixteen months based on the phases of Lune, our larger moon, and every third year there is an extra month to fix for seasonal drift,” the small ensign explained with a smile. She walked with purpose, but seemed quite relaxed and willing to take some time off her celebration to talk. “Galdor has a cultural cycle of six years, with the beginning of each new cycle being the year where the Night of Full Moons coincided with our equivalent of New Year’s Day, but we also have a cycle of seven periods associated with the Night of Full Moons, each fourteen-month period associated with a different one of our seven ancient gods. This one is going from the Cycle of Etro to the Cycle of Te’enpe,” she added.
Kaia
Balian nodded, taking in what she was telling him, as a federation member her really should brush up on the culture, especially with one as a member of his crew. “Similar to the aztec day of the dead, remember those that have gone, and those that have come in their place. So how does one celebrate the night of the full moons?” Balian asked genuinely interested. “and which of the ancients are we now associated with, I am assuming similar to the Chinese Zodiac thirteen cycle.”
Fleet Captain Balian Ibn Barazan
“Te’enpe,” she repeated with a small giggle. “He is the god of sky, of wind and clouds, and thunderous lightning. His cycle is one of freedom. We celebrate the Night of Full Moons with some special cuisine made for the day, dances and theatrical productions showing scenes from our Myths, speeches in honor of the born and the dead, feasts, and to end the night many go home to make love with their partner or partners,” she said casually. “One aspect I have missed as the only Arwan around, that is for certain,” she chuckled.
Kaia
Balian nodded, “Well I can help with all but the last. I am always willing to try new cuisine. I absolutely love the theatrical, hence why I was known as the Pirate of of Regula for many years. Though that might be a tale for another time. Perhaps we plan for the next celebration and the crew gets a cultural lesson?” Balian asked of the Ensign.
Balian
“Perhaps, Captain. Although I know there are some festivals that will have to wait until my return to Galdor. Things that cannot be done on foreign… soil,” Kaia chuckled lightly. “I’m sure you understand”
She thought deeply for quite a few moments. “Perhaps the night of stars. Fitting, when we are among the stars in the way that we are. I will get back to you on that, though,” the diminutive alien said with a shy grin.
Kaia
Balian grinned, “please do so Kaia, I am always open to learning, even if I am a stodgy old pirate, as well you might want to cordinate with Jack and William” BBalian was referring to the counselor and Exec, and did not think about the fact that he casually used thier first names instead of ranks. The Captain seemed a congenial enough man but a bit casual about most things, maybe it came with his age and experiences, but his attitude said stress showed up for him rarely, and even then he probably was smiling and laughing as the phasers and torpedoes flew.
FltCapt Balian Ibn Barazan
Kaia looked at the Captain with a slight amount of confusion. “Who are Jack and William?” she asked, frankly. She knew that humans and other tall aliens had multiple names, but it didn’t really factor into her way of perceiving the world. And she certainly hadn’t learned the first names of those particular officers.
