It was all a game, but it certainly didn’t feel like one. It was so hard to see him act this way towards her and yet, there was no other option. And that’s why, despite the game at play here, all her reactions- even the ones that were seemingly misplaced- were absolutely genuine. Because for her the game wasn’t a game at all. Regardless of her choice and her wanting to take this whole mess back into her (and their) hands, away from those pulling strings, there was real danger here. Real risk.

Faye pulled her legs up onto the bench, bending them at the knees and wrapping her arms around them. “Maybe that’s all I have left,” she said softly, the casualness of her tone evaporated. “I can profess my innocence all I like, and what, people will believe that? I’m not naive, I know how this works. All you have to do is look into someone’s eyes when all the cards are on the table to see what they truly think about you. And I’ve certainly had a mix of it today. Story of my life.” Nothing she said here would really matter as far at “official records” went, but it still felt important to say. “But you know what? Screw them!” She jabbed the tip of her index into her collarbone, hard enough that she could feel the lingering pain, her words laced with the anger that had finally returned to her stormy eyes. “I know what’s true. I know what’s real. And if holding on to that means I end up in a cell for the rest of my goddamn life, or worse? Fine, so be it!” Finally, she looked away from him, gazing off to the side of the cell her feet had precisely measured.

Cochrane watched her and listened, his face stoic. Seeing her like this was hard, but the goal was coking into view and there was no going back.

“After your statement, you will be allowed no visitors until the Intel representative arrives. Last chance, Calloway. Anything you want to help pass the time? Or do you have enough brooding and sulking stored up to hold you over for the next forty-eight hours?”

Jab the knife a little farther, why don’t you? she thought bitterly. The line between the ‘game’ and reality was really starting to blur. It had been since she had woken up from the nightmares that began her night. But Faye knew what was true- she had just said as much- and it was going to take everything she had, every last bit of mental fortitude to keep the line from blurring any further.

Two days. It seemed like nothing but it might as well have be an eternity. Except she had survived a much longer stretch of hell and maybe therein was her mercy here. She could do this, even if unlike before she would remember every damn second of it. “Two hundred and fifty-nine days with the Tal Shiar. I survived that; I can survive anything,” she said distantly. But they had already established that surviving was very different than living. Right now though, she was back to just trying to survive another day. Another week. Later, she could reassess.

Cochrane nodded once and said “Very well. 0900 hours. Mr. Wyatt and myself will take your statement after reading your charges.” and he took a step back and said “I’ll leave you to your thoughts till then. Try and sleep… you’ll need it.” and he turned and walked out of the Brig.

She squeezed her eyes tight as he walked away but then Faye suddenly stood up and gazed at his retreating form. “I’m glad you’re okay,” she called out. She needed something to feel okay about any of this. There was so much more she wanted to say but nothing felt right under the circumstances and the creeping sense of desperation was making it harder and harder to keep up the charade. She had always much rather avoided the truth, rather than lie. For better or worse, she wasn’t a lier. And right now she wanted to go back to cake and champagne in the Officer’s Mess.

“I just hope everyone remembers that I’m innocent until proven guilty. I understand that it’s strangely the other way around right now, but I think it would be good for people to be reminded of that fact.” Faye wasn’t going to be able to sleep but at least she could try to add that one thing to the things she knew to be true, to the list she was running in her head to keep her focused on the here and now.

The doors slid closed as she spoke, but slid open again immediately. Cochrane came almost storming into the Brig and right up to the force field. “If I thought for one second you were really happy we are all ok, I might be forced to pondet why the hell you shot is to begin with!”

He moved as close to the barrier as he could and said “But yeah, Im fine. No thanks to you. Damn near broke my wrist when I hit the deck.” and he held his hand, palm up, and moved it up down. There, on his palm in red letters, was a message: ‘Duress word is rainbow. Blue here tomorrow 1200’
