Cochrane looked at her without expression and said flatly “Unfortunately for them, they will be charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive.” and he put a finger to his lips and pointed at the ceiling. Of course the audio would be recording.
She of course understood that it was being recorded, but it mattered little in this instance. “Well, I could use the company.”
“So. I have reviewed word that someone from the Event Horizon is on their way to see you. Some Intel officer you may be familiar with. They will be here in two days. In the meantime… is there anything you wish to say? Please note, your formal statement with regards to the charge of espionage will be taken in a few hours by myself and Lieutenant Wyatt. I jusr wanted to know if there was anything you wanted to say before then.” Cochrane crossded his arms on his chest but the thumb on his left hand, resting on his right bicep, wiggled. From her position, it appeared there was something on the back of his hand, but hard to see from across the cell.

Hmmm, so Strickland was on his way. Which was good. Whether he was who they assumed he was or he was on her side remained to be seen, but at least her actions had prompted something to happen. That was what they had wanted, after all. Faye pushed herself to a sitting position, her stormy eyes taking him in. “I suppose I should be grateful we’re at least following some sort of procedure. I’ve done the whole ‘judge, jury and executioner’ shtick before. It’s terribly old.”

Cochrane’s icy blue eyes didn’t blink, and his tone remained emotionless. “Well, I suppose some of us take our Officer’s Oath seriously. Later today you will give your sworn statement after I read your charge to you. You, of course, have the right to not respond. From our past interactions, I am strongly tempted to encourage you to use that right. Flippant remarks and sarcastic responses won’t do you any favors at your hearing.”

It was all a game, but it certainly didn’t feel like one. It was so hard to see him act this way towards her and yet, there was no other option. And that’s why, despite the game at play here, all her reactions- even the ones that were seemingly misplaced- were absolutely genuine. Because for her the game wasn’t a game at all. Regardless of her choice and her wanting to take this whole mess back into her (and their) hands, away from those pulling strings, there was real danger here. Real risk.
Faye pulled her legs up onto the bench, bending them at the knees and wrapping her arms around them. “Maybe that’s all I have left,” she said softly, the casualness of her tone evaporated. “I can profess my innocence all I like, and what, people will believe that? I’m not naive, I know how this works. All you have to do is look into someone’s eyes when all the cards are on the table to see what they truly think about you. And I’ve certainly had a mix of it today. Story of my life.” Nothing she said here would really matter as far at “official records” went, but it still felt important to say. “But you know what? Screw them!” She jabbed the tip of her index into her collarbone, hard enough that she could feel the lingering pain, her words laced with the anger that had finally returned to her stormy eyes. “I know what’s true. I know what’s real. And if holding on to that means I end up in a cell for the rest of my goddamn life, or worse? Fine, so be it!” Finally, she looked away from him, gazing off to the said of the cell her feet had precisely measured.
