Posted by… suppressed (2) by the Post Ghost! 👻The time spent with the Counselor had been interesting. They hadn’t claimed her incompetant, so here she stood, hand passing over the chime to the Captain’s office. If she wasn’t here, she’d check the bridge. She tugged her tunic into play to be sure she was neat and waited for a response. She could have done a location check, but this way also a way to familiarize herself with the ship in a more active way.
Lt Amber Donnelly
Chief Medical OfficerNatalie was sitting at her desk, a prosthetic arm in front of her, and the CO wearing a pair of engineering goggles “Enter.” She said without looking up from what she was doing until she finished resetting the bio neural node that had gone out before looking up “Lt. Welcome to the Asimov. Have a seat. Would you care for a cup of coffee or glass of tea?” She asked standing up and extending her hand to the new Chief Medical Officer.
“Water, but I can get it,” she said and moved into the room. “If that’s ok…”
“Help yourself.” Natalie said sitting back down.“Tell me a little bit about yourself, how did you find yourself in Star Fleet Medical?” She asked.
CO
Amber paused as she made sure it was clear to get the water as she smiled. “I guess it just made sense to me. People out here get hurt, too. Right? And there are more than enough folks willing to help on Earth, though they have no desire to go into space. And even fewer still willing to leave it all behind for deep space.” She sounded like someone who just didn’t understand those kind of choices. How could someone ‘not’ want to explore out into the unknown?
“Though, I admit it wasn’t my first choice. I had thought I’d be an engineer. The idea of fixing nacelles and working around warp cores just thrilled me. Trouble is,” she laughed, “I can’t tell a hypo spray from a spano wrench. The basic medical classes everyone takes had me fascinated. And the next thing I knew,” she smiled and spread her arms, “here I am. And I assure you, I am happy to be so. I studied hard and I earned my way to where I am. No short cuts, no cheating. I want to lead another group of doctors and nurses to the passion I found in deep space medicine.” It sounded like a speech. But it was also entirely sincere.
Amber
CMONatalie had to chuckle “And I wouldn’t know a hypospray from a spanner.” She said “Medicine and Engineering are much the same.” Natalie said “Both fields require diagnosis and solutions of problems. One is just a living being and the other is a machine.” She added “I became fascinated by engineering when I got my first arm.” She said “The surgeons and therapists wanted to make sure that I knew how to repair my arm if there wasn’t someone around to do it for me. And that piqued my interest in engineering. So I chose the opposite path of you, and became an Engineer.” She said “And like you, I fought my way to where I am. I was the chief engineer of the Asimov for five years before I became her Captain.” Natalie said
“How does your family feel about you being this far from home?” She asked as she closed the access portal on the arm to finish the minor adjustments later.
CO
Amber smiled. “It’s no small feat to change directions in interests. I am impressed with your diligence. And while I am sure I have the necessary information to help if you have arm issues, I know for certain that I can help with everything else. And that includes up here,” she tapped her own temple. “I’m no Counselor, but I know sometimes as the Captain you can’t necessarily go to the Counselor without worrying about privacy vs the betterment of the ship.”
At the question about her family, she nodded. “They are pleased, as I am sure most parents are. And like most parents, probably wish I had taken a posting on Earth. But they knew, for a long time even before the Academy, that I had a desire for deep space. So I suppose they put on a good face and accept it.”
Amber
CMONatalie nodded “Where are you from originally?” She asked leaning back in her chair “Where did you do your studies?” She asked
CO
The woman smiled. “Raised on Earth, not far from the Academy, actually. My father worked in the Fleet shipyards. Mother worked in the nearby hospital. I always knew I would go to the Academy. Seeing it almost daily, it comes to your mind as a ‘given’. I got most of my medical training being dragged along with my mother. So I guess I soaked up more than I wanted to admit back then.” She laughed remembering how much she balked at her mother’s pressing to follow her footsteps. “But I have no desire to go backwards anytime soon. I prefer out there,” she nodded to the window to indicate space, itself. “I want to know what’s out there. And I want to help others who want to know.” She glanced back half expecting the see the CO laughing.
