“I think we can come up with something a bit more civilized than that, if not quite to the individual level of a commbadge,” Jon said, adopting a thoughtful pose. “I’ll need to check a couple things, but hopefully we’ll have the start of an internal comm system by the end of the day.”

Keegan nodded to Zen and looked at Ensign Smythe”Let’s see if we can divert the energy of the deuterium into the ship’s power grid without overloading them. We’ll probably have to release the energy in spurts to do that.”

“With respect, sir, I’m not sure that’s the best idea,” Jon said. “At least not until we’ve had a chance to assess the reactor. Trying to force more fuel through it may cause it to break down entirely.”

“The reactor is holding operationally steady, but nowhere near the required power output. The magnetic fields for higher outputs are not possible with the current damage to the reactor,” replied NE Mitchells, “Or the finite control without a computer.”

Zen nodded. “Murphy, stay here and let me know how this goes. I’ll got topside and see if we can find the captain,” he said turning to head from engineering.

Jon turned his attention to the reactor now, ideas for a rudimentary internal comm system spinning in his head. Mitchells said it was damaged, Jon needed to know just how bad that damage was, and both what was needed to repair it, and what could be done to repair it.

“Ensign would you like a hand with the reactor?”

Jon didn’t look up from his scanning. “I’ve got to find out if we can do anything for it first, sir,” he replied.

After looking at the reactor, Smythe could determine that Michaels was correct. Several of the magnetic fields were not operational to hold fusion containment, so the fusion generator was operating at less than standard operating efficiency. It was actually a miracle that they got a fusion reaction out of the generator at all. The components required to replace were quite extensive, more parts that they could possibly jury rig out of the current systems to make it work. Some of the components and chips required were not available in any particular device on the ship, and were very specific to fusion generators. The only way to replace them was to manufacture them.

Sufficient say, restoring power the ship using the current level of 24th century technology was impossible, that so much Smythe was beginning to realize. They would have to find different ways to power the ship, more older mechanical ways of generating and storing power to manufacture the parts they need. A thought in Smythe’s head about the historical history Engineering lessons they studied at the Academy. The Academy thought to give Starfleet Engineers a wide range of expertise of various older technologies, ever since Captain Scott was found by the Enterprise. Studying the past and knowing about the past could lead insight to future technologies – since most Engineering principles were developed in the past anyway. So things like constructing and/or evaluating different basic forms of power were something they learned. Especially since the possibility of going on away missions to ancient civilizations and/or pre-warp civilizations could be possible.
