James tossed his duffel haphazardly onto the bed and silently took in his new quarters. Cramped was one word that came to mind. Of course, in time, he would adjust to his new digs, he knew and so with a sigh he resigned himself to the new reality before him. It’s not that he didn’t want to be here necessarily. In fact, he was quite lucky to have been offered the Chief Medical Officer assignment so early after being asked to leave the Academy Staff. James could be cantankerous to put it mildly. It was the Irish in him and could be as evident as his bright red hair.

These quarters, however, was not what he had been expecting. He at least imagined they would be bigger. And if this was the type of accommodations department heads were afforded then he almost felt a pang of pity for the rest of the crew.

James stoked his well manicured beard which was something he sometimes absently did when he was in deep thought. It was, in a way, his signature tic and the cadets back at the Academy loved to mimic it when they impersonated him. In truth, he wouldn’t have even known he had such a tic had it not been pointed out to him over and over again throughout the years. It got so annoying at times he had considered shaving off the beard thinking that might put an end to him doing it and others pointing it out to him incessantly. Each time he was close to doing so, however, he changed his mind.

It had been awhile since James had last been on a ship that he had to think about the proper check-in procedures. There were mental evaluations to be had, physicals to be taken, and the always stressful interview with the ship’s command staff. Specifically the Captain. Having just arrived none of those tasks appealed to him. Of course, meeting the captain would come last as they always wanted to know if the other two tasks had been completed first so they could send you off to work. It wasn’t a good idea to keep a commanding officer waiting. And it was very unprofessional for a doctor to caught ill-prepared and wanting.

So that left the physical and mental evaluation. The physical appealed more than the latter since it would give him an opportunity to see Sickbay and meet some of his staff. He was a little interested in that. But meeting with the ship’s counselor also had its’ benefits. It gave him the chance to gain useful insight into the ship’s atmosphere and crew from the one person who would know it best outside of the command staff. Heck, if the Captain had a quirk or the First Officer had a particular peeve, it was good to find those things out in advance before meeting with them and getting off to a bad start. It was also good to meet with a colleague even though health sciences were very different in their own right.

James, with mind settled on where to begin first, accessed his quarters computer console and located the office of the Ship’s Counselor on the directory. Committing it to memory he turned the console off and headed for the door. He paused just for a moment as he considered if it would be better to schedule an appointment rather than show up unannounced but decided to continue anyway. After all, a new arrival really couldn’t show up unannounced anyway as the second they were assigned to a ship’s crew they automatically we expected by Counselor anyway. Same for Medical actually. Your name just popped right up on the agenda.

With that in mind, James shut off the lights to his quarters and left.
