Nurse Naomi Mendoza stood over Dr. Grace, and tried gently waking Dr. Grace up. “Dr. Grace, Dr. Grace, are you alright?” The nurse had ran the medical tricorder on Dr. Grace, and found Dr. Grace with no serious injuries, and had fixed any open wounds, but Dr. Grace was still bruised in several places. Only half of the medical staff had awoken, and those who were awake were busy tending to injuries and attempting to wake the rest of the staff up.

A vaguely familiar voice kept drifting in and out of Adeline’s consciousness as she lay in a crumpled heap on the Sickbay floor. Her eyes slowly peeled open as she desperately tried to recall how she ended up there. The internal dampeners, that’s right… she recalled being tossed to the ground at the unexpected cessation of gravity. But she thought she’d gotten back up and started treating people… had she been imagining it? The exertion of pondering the exact series of events made the throb in her skull even worse and her eyes drifted shut again. No, no, no, she told herself, forcing them back open as she slowly identified the voice as coming from a nearby nurse. She needed to get up and help… uncurling her fists from the balls they had ended up in, she laid them flat on the deck and attempted to slowly push up into a seated position.

Dr. McGill

Another nurse saw Dr. McGill. “Easy there, Dr. McGill,” said Nurse Okami, “You are heavily bruised, but extremely lucky… no bleeding, and no broken bones.”

The nurse pressed a hypospray of medicine into Dr. McGill. It was a simulant plus something for the pain. Dr. McGill would feel a lot better once the medicine took affect. Given the staff knew most of the other staff’s medical records, or at least aware of the allergies, the medicine that Nurse Okami would not cause a negative reaction. “Commbadges are out, we seem to be running on emergency power. Not sure if life support is running but the air seems to be getting a little stale. Dr. Grace has not yet awoken, which leaves you the highest ranking medical officer at the moment.”

Adeline smiled thankfully at the nurse as she felt the hypospray press against her body. She had barely begun to move yet and she could already tell that her second trip to Sickbay’s deck had not been a pleasant one, especially so soon after the first. As the pain faded away and she began to feel a little more alert, she slowly continued her trip back up to her feet, attempting to right her disheveled self as she digested the nurse’s briefing. Her eyes widened slightly at the situation that they were in. She wasn’t fresh out of the Academy and medical school, but this still wasn’t a situation she felt particularly prepared for. Her top teeth sunk into her bottom lip as she debated what they should do next. Without communications, they had no idea where people needed their attention on the ship and, given whatever had happened, she imagined that their attention was very needed. Finally, she released her compressed lip and tried to straighten herself just a smidge more.

“What’s the situation like here? How many medical personnel are injured and how many are able to get to work?” she queried the nurse. Depending on how many people were up and about, they could have some remain in Sickbay to treat anyone who made it there and then form a team to start moving through the ship… but that didn’t help with the whole potential life support issue.

Dr. McGill

“All the personnel were injured, and the serious ones are undergoing treatment. Only half of the staff in sickbay are awake. The rest of the staff are either unconscious or off-duty and not here. We haven’t had any off-duty personnel get back to Sickbay, however,” said Nurse Okami, “Anyone who was sitting or laying down was not seriously injured. Most of the injuries are bruises, a few bone fractures, and some serious cuts that have come in from personnel surrounding Sickbay.”

Adeline bit her lip again as she digested the report from Okami. Hopefully off-duty personnel would eventually make their way to Sickbay if they were able to do so. For now, they would have to work with what they have.

“Split the able-bodied medical staff into two groups. The first should triage any remaining injured here, starting with those that are still unconscious unless there are more obvious, pressing cases. The second group should pack what supplies they can to stabilize anyone seriously injured and begin to make their way to the bridge. Ensuring the command staff is all right is their first priority. I’ll remain here as the ranking officer for now, but you should go with the other group.”

She looked briefly shocked at how authoritative her own voice sounded as she relayed her plan. After a moment’s hesitation, she added a slightly meeker, “… please” and then looked expectantly at the nurse.

Dr. McGill

“Yes Doctor,” said the nurse. Nurse Okami organized the staff into two groups, with both groups helping to pack up medical supplies. “Dr. McGill, what about the personnel on other levels? We’re on Deck 6. There is deck 7 below us and 5 decks above us to the Bridge.”

Adeline resisted the urge to gnaw on her lip this time. “Triage and treat as you go, but your priority is to get to the bridge and make sure that the Captain is okay. You can split up as needed to make that happen, but make sure that no one is alone with communication systems down.”

Dr. McGill

“Yes doctor,” said the nurse. 3 medical kits were prepared. Nurse Okami sighed, it was a long way up to the Bridge. It was a little more than half of the staff available, but being that the Brazen was a small ship, and out of the 12 medical personnel, only 5 were not injured. Only a medic and a nurse would be sent to the other decks. Ensign Shoshawnia would be sent to Deck 7 to check for injured quickly then help out on Deck 4 in Engineering. Ensign Clancey would be sent to Deck 3, to establish a makeshift medical station in one of the Cargo Bays, and Nurse Okami would head straight for the Bridge.
