Veyn pulled himself to his feet using the edge of the science station he had been sitting at when the ship had been unexpectedly yanked into warp. The giant bruise encircling his right eye from where the microscope had been slammed into his face had left Veyn with monocular vision, which made taking stock of his surroundings in the pitch black even more impossible.“I…” Veyn winced, his had raising to his temple instinctively. He felt a wet warmth on his fingers. Two different streams of blood trickled down his face, one from his forehead and another from a gash under his eye. “I likely have a concussion,” Veyn said with resignation, picking up and then collapsing into the chair he had been thrown out of by the landing. “But considering the circumstances, I suppose I am relatively alright,” he said with as much good humor as he could muster.
Lieutenant Cewa turned his head to orient toward the source of Maher’s voice, which immediately gave him an intense bout of vertigo. “Are you injured, Ensign?”
(Lt. Cewa, Science)
“Yes, sir, I apparently am. My right wrist and left leg are hurting. Probably a sprain… I hope… and I ache all over. It feels like something heavy fell on me. Our commbadges don’t appear to be working, sir,” said Ensign Maher. Maher limped toward Lt. Cewa. He ripped off his sleeve from his uniform, from his right side and tore it into two. He folded it, keeping the former inside of the sleeve on the outside, and making it long strip of cloth that could be used as temporary bandage. “It might not be the cleanest, but we need to bandage your wound until we can get help. Unfortunately, I don’t think I can tie it around you, my right wrist hurts too much. What do you suggest our next plan of action, Lieutenant, once you bandage yourself up?”
GM
Veyn felt a pang of gratitude at the gesture. This was his first major injury as a Starfleet officer; the Nova-class ships he had been assigned to in the past were much less treacherous. Veyn was feeling a bit overwhelmed, but his even demeanor kept him from panicking. Ensign Maher’s confidence and initiative made him feel a bit better about the situation, but he knew that he was technically the ranking officer in this situation.
Wincing against the pain, Lieutenant Cewa tied the strip of cloth around his forehead as a makeshift bandage. “Thank you,” he said to Maher sincerely. “I’ve been meaning to train with medical for emergencies such as this… we might want to wait until we find a doctor before we evaluate your wrist or attempt to fashion a sling.”
Cewa stood unsteadily, bracing against the console as he found his balance.
“Do you need help, Lieutenant?” asked Ensign Maher as he watched the Lieutenant walk towards the door.
Veyn smiled, despite himself. “I may be acting a tad dramatically. But given that I’m not quite confident in my ability to stay upright at the moment, I’m being cautious. But thank you, Ensign, the offer is appreciated.”
Then he used his mind’s eye to construct the room around him, which he had become very familiar with. Veyn took slow and deliberate steps towards the door, we he tested to see if it would open once he reached it with his outstretched hand. “The plan, Mister Maher, is to find our crewmates.”
(Lt. Cewa, Science)
The door, failed to open.
“Climbing down to sickbay might prove a little difficult for me. Judging from the emergency lights and the fact that the door failed to open automatically, I would hazard to theorize that the turbolifts are not functioning,” said Ensign Maher, “Probably most systems are down. If I recall correctly, the manual release for the door is on the right. I would imagine that the Cargo Bays on this deck would be a good gathering point, or we can head up to the Bridge, that’s one deck above us.”
GM
Lieutenant Cewa paused to consider Maher’s evaluation of the situation. “Well I’m certainly not leaving you behind,” Veyn said matter-of-factly. “So sickbay and the bridge are out of the question considering they require traversing the jefferies tubes.”
“Or at least through the turbolift shafts,” said Maher.
He fumbled for the manual release and pulled the lever, hoping that would free them from the science lab. “Which way to the cargo bay?”
(Lt. Cewa, Science)
The door opened.
“I believe it is to the right, I think? Oh! I think there is a PADD with the ship’s layout somewhere in the lab. I kept a copy because I’m not too familiar with the Brazen ship layout, I only studied it an hour or so ago,” said Maher. Spending some time to search the scattered items on the ground, Maher found the PADD he was looking for. “Ah, darn, it was to the left.”
GM
Veyn chuckled lightly as he held a hand to his head. “I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t memorized the ship’s layout yet. To the left we go.”
Maher found a working tricorder on the ground before leaving the lab.
Lieutenant Cewa stuck his head out of the open doorway and glanced both ways down the corridor, assessing the situation as best he could with his impaired vision in the emergency lighting. Then he started down the hallway to the left, looking for the cargo bay doors and checking behind him occasionally to make sure Ensign Maher was following. “I’m not going to claim to know exactly what it is we should be doing right now, Ensign. But trying to do anything on our own seems like a fool’s errand. Let’s find others and go from there.”
(Lt. Cewa, Science)
“Aye sir. There’s only the shuttle repair bays, the cargo bays of the upper level and the science lab. Fortunately, it is a small ship.”
Walking down the hallway, they came to the cargo bay upper level doors. Maher scanned the cargo bays, in Cargo Bay A, he could read that there were personnel gathering, Cargo Bay B was empty but Cargo Bay C was registering a build up gas and increase of temperature. “Um, sir, take a look at these readings… I think there is a fire in Cargo Bay C.”
GM
“What class?” Veyn responded instantly and automatically. He scampered down the hallway to the doors to Cargo Bay C, motioning for Maher to follow and use the tricorder again when they were closer for a more precise reading.
Veyn cautiously laid a hand on the door, hoping to gauge the intensity of the fire within at least partially through the heat radiating from the room. Lieutenant Cewa was a chemist by trade, so he had plenty of experience with fires. “What’s the fuel source, Ensign? Electrical, chemical, metallic, biological?”
