“Your guess is good as mine, sir. But whatever it was, only emergency lighting is on. The comm system is down, so we can’t even contact the Bridge at the moment. I’m not even sure that life support is on. The computer systems are down, and something struck us causing damage to most of the systems. Could be we were attacked, but internal dampeners are offline. Gravity seems to be slightly off, seems a little heavier than the standard 1 G we are use to,” said the crewman, “For now, the staff has been collecting themselves and tending to injuries, but we need a plan, sir.”

“Well if life support is down and we’ve got some sort of gravity despite everything else being offline, we’re probably on a planet or station with its own atmosphere,” Jon said, heaving himself up to a more comfortable sitting position.

“Sounds plausible,” replied the crewman.

“As far as a plan goes, we need two things first and foremost: power and computer access. We’ll have to use tricorders and other handheld scanners to diagnose the issues with those systems before we can even start repairs. Grab whoever’s least injured, split into two teams. One team works on restoring power, the other on computer access. Sound good?”

“Aye sir. What about informing the Bridge?” asked the crewman.

“Until we can get comms back up we’ll have to use runners. Thankfully this ship is small,” Jon said. “Here, help me up and we’ll get everyone organized and find some poor schmuck to go explain the situation and the plan to the Captain.”

The crewman helped Smythe to his feet. “I guess that poor schmuck is me, Crewman Michaels… I think I’m the least injured one on the team,” replied Michaels.

“Sorry,” Jon said. “Best of luck to you, though. Make a note of the most serious damage you see on your way up, we’ll make it a priority once you get back.”

“Aye sir,” said Michaels.

Slowly, members of the Engineering staff gathered around Ensign Smythe, and then split up to the two assigned teams, while Michaels had the unfortunate job to crawl around the jefferies tubes to reach the Bridge… several decks above.

“Alright, everybody that’s left, grab a tricorder or a scanner and start analyzing systems. I need two people on the power team to go check the fusion generators for the impulse engines, the last thing we need to be dealing with right now is a major radiation leak,” Jon said, taking charge.

For his own part, he aimed his tricorder at the warp core to try and determine just how much work would be required to restore main power.

For the most part, the systems for the warp core were intact. There were micro fractures however, that could easily be repaired. No leaks or radiation was detected. The magnetic fields that the warp core drew from fusion generators were offline, meaning until fusion generators was restored, the warp core would remain offline.

“Well, that’s good news,” Jon said to himself, directing two NEs to begin repairing the microfractures while he waited for the diagnosis of the generators.

An hour later, the team checking on the fusion generators reported back. “The good news is, we have one working fusion generator. But it will only last us a week or so, the deuterium fuel lines are leaking, and its the only thing that is keeping life support operational. The bad news is the rest of the fusion generators are completely busted. We need to replicate the parts to fix it all, but that’s kind of difficult when you only have one fusion generator. We wouldn’t have the power requirements to actually manufacture what we need to fix the ships’ systems. Nor do we have the spare parts either, given that Starfleet was expecting us back in 3 days for the post-shakedown analysis,” said the engineers reporting back to Ensign Smythe.

“Not ideal,” Jon said. “What if we cannibalize parts from two of the offline generators to get the third back up and running, and shore up the fuel lines to the one that’s already working?” he asked. It would limit their impulse speed if they were ever able to get back up off the planet, but really, the impulse speed was a secondary concern so long as they could go to warp, which he needed at least two working generators to accomplish. But they were Starfleet Engineers. This should be a cakewalk compared to building a replicator out of rocks.

“The other generators are far too damaged. We’d have to disassemble all of the broken generators to possibly get one additional fusion generator, but that would take weeks, maybe months,” said the engineers, “Something overloaded the EPS systems, and the fusion generators. We were lucky to retain one.”
