Natalie waited until the Commodore had departed the room before she addressed the assembled crew “You heard the Commodore. We have our new ship. Gather any personal effects that you have in your temporary quarters and report to the ship.” Natalie ordered. She looked at Smythe “You look like you have something on your mind Ensign. What is it?” She asked sitting the bottle on a small side table. Before Smythe could answer she looked at Zen “Stay back Commander. I want to speak with you before we get to the ship.” She said.

Zen nodded, carefully folded his hands behind his back and became very interested in the art work in the room while the rest of the crew trooped out. Giving the engineer a raised eyebrow. “Out with it Smythe.” He said.

“Sirs, I don’t see my Department Head in the room, or anyone that could reasonably be expected to fulfill that role,” he said, trying to keep his back straight and split his eye contact evenly between Greer and Kaida. “I was looking for her to report in when everything started to go wrong, and I suppose I just want some reassurance that my failure to prevent what happened isn’t going to be held against me.”

Zen considered the Ensign and frowned as was his normal action in maintaining the stern XO persona. “You did what you could and helped evacuate the department Ensign. You acted in a commendable fashion.”
