Resuming their prior conversation, Lucas said “I consider it necessary. She could either find out now or after months of empty promises. That man is a terrible liar. Someone would’ve caught him. At least this way she doesn’t get a citation for fraternisation.”

Zens eyes slid sideways and he gave his head a small shake. “So you are saving her from her terrible relationship choices. It’s very ancient earth Oprah…I mean you’ll need a wig of course…and a microphone, a book club maybe.”

“I’d just recommend my own books anyway. Need the money. Despite being a very well compensated attorney, Zoe loves collecting alimony. I really don’t know why Starfleet stuck me in the Counselling department. Not exactly a paragon of healthy interpersonal relationships.” They came to a turbolift. As they ascended, Lucas couldn’t help himself. “We can stop by sickbay if you need a snack.”

“Blood sucker.” He said in response to the comment about Lucas’ wife. He used the correct tone of a good friend who shares the aggrieved comments of another. “No other department would take you because you upset every instructor and department had that ever came across you.”

As they ascended Zen kept his eyes on the roof. “No thank you. I had a nice navigator in the shuttle ride over.”

“I hope you waited until you were safely landed. If I remember correctly, you just sprout wings to fly. Really leaves everyone else in the lurch.”

A curl of Zens mouth was the only reply.

The doors hissed open. “Senior officer’s deck. Your quarters are just down the hall.” Lucas looked at Zen’s bag. “Blimey. You packed light. Even for you. A positive.”

Zen shrugged. “Nothing to take with me, everything I need I can replicate. And no B negative. I’m cutting back on the sweets.” He joked back as they reached the room. “You coming in or do you want to skull off and annoy more people and I’ll see you in a few hours to talk about my feelings and how much my mother is a horrible old boot.”

“Only a moment, I have my daughter’s life to destroy too. Apparently dragging her onto a starship is ’totally unfair and uncool.’ Well, home sweet home.” He gestured for Zen to enter. “Sorry I couldn’t get something more… lairish.”

Zennneth laughed then. ”She’ll get over it once she finds out she can still make calls back to her friends and replicate nail polish at will.” He entered the room and put down the solitary bag. As he did so he looked around the basic crew living space.

“Mother back around? Sorry to hear that mate. She has a taste for humans too, right?”

“Har har har,” he said picking up a vase and turning it in his hand. He put it down. “She said you’re welcome to come visit. She’s trying a new thing with Papya fruit that she thinks Emily will love.”

“Might take you up on that. Next time I’m told I want a vacation.”

“You mean the next time we tell you we need a vacation from you, you mean?” He asked and went to the bedroom to drop his bag off.

He was back in less than a minute. “Well that’s me unpacked. You checked in with medical yet?”
